One good thing about this election? The CAQ went from a supermajority in 2022 with 90 seats and 40% of the vote to 0 seats in 2026 with 10% of the vote....after promising then dropping electoral reform. If our political class were able to learn from mistakes, they might take a lesson from that.

The Quebec election results were probably the best we could have hoped for on this electoral hellscape. I'd like to say PSPP is contained by minority status, but he can likely find a partner in the Cons for his racism, in the Cons and Libs for austerity budgets and breaking social programs, so no.

thing this election. Looking like the PQ's PSPP will win, even though the only thing he should be winning is "most punchable face." Best thing I'd dare to hope for is that all parties get 20% of the vote and the province is locked in lawless stalemate for 4 years. We're not that lucky though.

of the population. As for the CAQ, their new leader is looking to go from a supermajority last election to no seats this one. Fun fact: Quebec's new eye exam is trying to find the letters "CAQ" on her signs. Seeing the CAQ lose so badly after dropping electoral reform as a policy is the one good...

I didn't think I could hate that far-right cesspool the Quebec Conservative Party more than I do, but they are running a candidate named David Alarie, who called for to "euthanize" everyone who got the COVID vaccine. Only Quebec is insane enough for a party to keep a candidate calling to murder 92%

on the bigoted "Securalism charter" by promising not to repeal it nor use the "notwithstanding clause" to keep it. In other words, the law will eventually become unconstitutional, and rights groups and individuals will have to pay their own money in legal fees to bring that evil law down.

...and he's here to let you know he wants to bring people together. The Liberals have always been anti-labour, anti-poor, pro-austerity, but they've usually been pro-human rights and pro-immigration. Mr. Billion (he sounds like a third-rate Bond villain) has found the worst possible position...

I think the goal is to make party founder René Lévesque spin in his grave so fast, he can be harnessed by Hydro Québec as a power source. The Liberals picked their new leader, Charles Milliard, when he climbed to the top of the corpses of his political enemies in the usual Liberal pit fight...

As we teeter over the abyss of another Quebec election, I reflect how there is no truly good French translation for "dumpster fire." "Fiasco" and "bordel" just lack the viscerality of "dumpster fire." I voted for Québec solidaire. If this province's socialism were not purely performative...

I really don't see the point in having four parties for omnicide and/or fascism. Honestly, you should be barred from running at any level of government if you don't have a minimum grasp of climate science or you're willing to use the Notwithstanding Clause to create tiered citizenship.

Did my civic duty and voted in the Quebec election today. One tepid cheer for Québec Solidaire. They're far from perfect, but given the other four major parties are for fossil fuel expansion and/or making second-class citizens out of minority groups, there really was no choice.

Just in the last few weeks, Carney has gutted environmental assessments and endangered species legislation, eased regulations on oil and gas, opened the door for new pipelines and data centres, arrested environmentalists...and gave a speech at the UN about the urgency of climate change...

Also, all Melville except "Benito Cereno" feels heavy handed, but at the same time the point is completely obscure. It's like being beaten by an angry mob bearing blank signs and banners.

Hamish Copley @eyvindkelda.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
I can't hate Melville as a human being, but I still have nightmares about reading the unabridged Moby Dick. A dollop of homoeroticism in the first couple of pages and a few hilariously bad lines can't make up for that exhausting, rambling chaos about a man chasing a floating Rorschach blot.

Haven't heard the complaints. She was marvellous in the Jedi games, which is where I know her best. Was it Rapsittie Street Kids? I'd heard her audio file was corrupted for that, but she claims to have deliberately trolled them (not that anyone heard her in 2002, the show was pulled before it ended)

No surprises here. Québec Solidaire is far from a perfect party, but it's the only one of the five that neither wants to expand oil and gas, nor transform minorities into second-class citizens. Referenda are always going to be an albatross around their neck, but if it comes to that, I can vote "No."

Overall, Carney is gaining on the Conservatives, while losing to the left. In some places that's a haemorrhage, in other places a trickle.
001
Hamish Copley @eyvindkelda.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
And while it's a small step left, Chicoutimi is about as Conservative blue as it gets, but went from 34% conservative to 12.5%, with Liberals going from 31 to 51%, and the NDP very slightly increasing its share.
000
Hamish Copley @eyvindkelda.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
While most of the media is heavily focused on the message "3 by-elections endorse Carney," a more interesting story is the leftward surge in all three. Liberals lost ground in their two strongholds, with the NDP tripling to 2nd place in Toronto (to 25%) and the Greens quintupling in Vancouver.

I've been mostly keeping up with Carney's dismantling of environmental laws (he seems determined to transform himself into a Captain Planet villain on climate) but it turns out it's a lot worse than anyone suspected. I follow Canadian news closely, and only saw half of this. #MarkCarney #CdnPolitics

Sad to learn that the great gay activist Michael Hendricks has died. I only met him the one time, at his wedding. It was the first same-sex wedding in Quebec (they had fought for it for six years) in 2004, and a lot of us activists from community were the guests. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

A new perfect example for the Oxford comma, along with, "I'd like to thank my parents, Ayn Rand and God," though I'd probably read this fictionalized account of Sylvia Plath's life.

You know, of all the things that should kill AI (the ecological terrorism and acceleration of climate changes, the damaging psychological effects, the erosion of democracy, the destruction of the lives of artists), it's probably going to be simple economics that kills it.

Today is the 57th anniversary of the legalization of homosexuality in Canada, the eve before the Stonewall Riots in the US. We tend to forget our movement didn't start with Stonewall up here and get lazy about our own history, but that erases twenty years of hard work and activism. #pride

Personally, I was hoping for a sinkhole. One opened on the White House lawn in 2018, and experts were warning that the ballroom might be too heavy for the grounds (it was built on a swamp and is highly unstable).

I owned this copy of Mad Magazine in 1991, I read it when I was 14, and I think about this panel whenever Trump's violent misogyny comes up in the media (like today with the DOJ's latest witch hunt of E Jean Carroll). Everyone knew, even kids in Canada knew what Trump was, 35 years ago.

A weird last day of my forties, thinking a lot about the people I knew growing up who did not make it this far. Strange, too, to think I never expected to. I came out in 1993, and no gay man expected to get old back then.
