One good thing about this election? The CAQ went from a supermajority in 2022 with 90 seats and 40% of the vote to 0 seats in 2026 with 10% of the vote....after promising then dropping electoral reform. If our political class were able to learn from mistakes, they might take a lesson from that.

The Quebec election results were probably the best we could have hoped for on this electoral hellscape. I'd like to say PSPP is contained by minority status, but he can likely find a partner in the Cons for his racism, in the Cons and Libs for austerity budgets and breaking social programs, so no.

As we teeter over the abyss of another Quebec election, I reflect how there is no truly good French translation for "dumpster fire." "Fiasco" and "bordel" just lack the viscerality of "dumpster fire." I voted for Québec solidaire. If this province's socialism were not purely performative...

Did my civic duty and voted in the Quebec election today. One tepid cheer for Québec Solidaire. They're far from perfect, but given the other four major parties are for fossil fuel expansion and/or making second-class citizens out of minority groups, there really was no choice.

Just in the last few weeks, Carney has gutted environmental assessments and endangered species legislation, eased regulations on oil and gas, opened the door for new pipelines and data centres, arrested environmentalists...and gave a speech at the UN about the urgency of climate change...

No surprises here. Québec Solidaire is far from a perfect party, but it's the only one of the five that neither wants to expand oil and gas, nor transform minorities into second-class citizens. Referenda are always going to be an albatross around their neck, but if it comes to that, I can vote "No."

While most of the media is heavily focused on the message "3 by-elections endorse Carney," a more interesting story is the leftward surge in all three. Liberals lost ground in their two strongholds, with the NDP tripling to 2nd place in Toronto (to 25%) and the Greens quintupling in Vancouver.

I've been mostly keeping up with Carney's dismantling of environmental laws (he seems determined to transform himself into a Captain Planet villain on climate) but it turns out it's a lot worse than anyone suspected. I follow Canadian news closely, and only saw half of this. #MarkCarney #CdnPolitics

Sad to learn that the great gay activist Michael Hendricks has died. I only met him the one time, at his wedding. It was the first same-sex wedding in Quebec (they had fought for it for six years) in 2004, and a lot of us activists from community were the guests. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

A new perfect example for the Oxford comma, along with, "I'd like to thank my parents, Ayn Rand and God," though I'd probably read this fictionalized account of Sylvia Plath's life.

Today is the 57th anniversary of the legalization of homosexuality in Canada, the eve before the Stonewall Riots in the US. We tend to forget our movement didn't start with Stonewall up here and get lazy about our own history, but that erases twenty years of hard work and activism. #pride

I owned this copy of Mad Magazine in 1991, I read it when I was 14, and I think about this panel whenever Trump's violent misogyny comes up in the media (like today with the DOJ's latest witch hunt of E Jean Carroll). Everyone knew, even kids in Canada knew what Trump was, 35 years ago.

A weird last day of my forties, thinking a lot about the people I knew growing up who did not make it this far. Strange, too, to think I never expected to. I came out in 1993, and no gay man expected to get old back then.

My awesome husband brought to our local medieval geek event for a pre-birthday date (Foire de la Passion médiévale). Got to hold some armour, and shoot a bow. Turns out than twenty years since the last time I tried a bow, and my skills for some reason have not gotten any better.

Reading all these obituaries about how Stephen Lewis was the best prime minister Canada never had. And he was one of them, certainly. They said the same about Tommy Douglas and Jack Layton. You'd think sooner or later this country would figure out it should elect these NDPers while they are alive.

The last time someone I supported made NDP leader, we had Jack Layton, so I very glad for Avi Lewis. The party chose by more than 50% the to stay left and make the climate transition a central focus, rather than waffle right and drown in irrelevance by trying to copy the Liberals. #NDP #CanPolitics

Strange, melancholy night. Looking up old friends, most have completely vanished. One dead, though, a year ago today, only found out from his obituary. There was no one left around from that circle to let me know, and none to tell. Goodbye, Jared. We'll miss you.

Finished Shakespeare's King John, about a real-life king who pillaged and extorted his subjects, put aside his queen to marry a child bride, and was so awful that everyone from serfs to earls rose up, and helped a foreign power conquer England. Glad we don't have to worry about rulers like that now!

Yesterday was World AIDS Day, so I was thinking about Roy Thorsen, my one friend who died of it, in 1995. He was an older gay man who gave us gay kids a safe space in his own home when our homes weren't. Miss you.

I was diagnosed with #HIV in 1998, when I was 30. Many of my friends had died of AIDS. I did not expect to live to 50. I’m 58 now. HIV treatment works. Treatment also makes it impossible for me to pass HIV on during sex. Ensure HIV treatment for all. End HIV stigma. #WorldAIDSDay
Me on a candlelit vigil for AIDS in 1987. Me last week. Looking pretty healthy for 58 (28 years living with HIV).

If François Legault and Danielle Smith are going to keep pressing the "ignore constitution" button like lonely rats with the morphine water, maybe we could require they press an actual button, with a mild electroshock. They're not as smart as rats, but negative reinforcement might work eventually.

Disappointed there's not Transition Brossard or Projet Brossard for the Quebec municipal elections. I guess I'm stuck with Ensemble Brossard, since Vision's platform seems to be, "Burn the forests, grow the streets, make Brossard Mordor to Montreal's Minas Tirith."

Even more disturbing in the same month that the Liberals invited Project 2025's founder to talk to the Liberal caucus behind closed doors. As much as I disliked Carney and didn't vote for him, even I didn't expect him to steer his party (and the country) toward fascism.

So did Carney stand up for Canada or did "Dr. Roberts" blow off the Liberal cabinet meeting? The "Dr." is a vicious enemy of democracy, the rule of law, women's rights. We have yet to see the PM declare that Canada vigorously opposes such dark actors. thetyee.ca/Opinion/2025...

An image I made for any brave time travellers wanting to set up Pride events in 14th-century England. Hugging hyenas were a medieval symbol of homosexuality, and the text is as close to "we're here, we're queer, get used to it" as I can get in medieval English. #2SLGBTQhistory #queerhistory
