You want to shift the goal posts a little more or come back to the actual discussion? The thing you’re describing, even if it’s real (and I disagree it is), is absolutely not something that would theoretically help more than a handful of people

Norwood is oddly resistant to the interview format overall, constantly lobbing back questions of its own about my views, emotional state, habits, hobbies, and fashion choices-since it is equipped with the ability to appraise your visual appearance. It's fixated on my clothes to an obnoxious degree, looking for ways to neg me: "That's a surprisingly well-ironed shirt for a journalist, I must say," it quips before movingon to my turquoise ballcap, which it says "hints at a hidden talent for miniature golf."

I think we found the problem
The film experienced a troubled production due to frequent clashes between director Gray, and producer Parkes, which began when the executive overseeing the project, Sony executive vice president of production David Beaubaire, left the studio in the summer of 2018 and was not replaced.
An early draft of the script, which Sony initially praised, and which received the attention of stars Hemsworth and Thompson, had an edgier tone than the finished film, featuring sociopolitical commentary on the current debate surrounding immigration. The main antagonists were to be an alien music group inspired by the Beatles, with the four members merging into one villain during the climax.
Parkes, who had final cut on the film, had a heavy hand in overseeing rewrites during pre-production and filming, which he and MacDonald claimed were necessary because of the small prep time. The rewrites largely dealt with production/budget constraints (including changing several major locations), punch-ups for the actors, and reconceiving the villains. His new script pages stripped away the early draft's modern sensibilities, and were sent daily to Hemsworth and Thompson, who were both so confused that they hired their own dialogue writers. Parkes also stepped into traditional directing duties, although the Directors Guild of America did not get involved. Parkes and Gray also clashed over the color-correction process in post-
production.

This whole thread (which I can’t link bc qts and replies are disabled) gets at an interesting point, which is that the reason the original movies worked was the chemistry between multiple A-list actors absolutely working their ass off. The remake was a massive dud because it…did not have that

. @davekarpf.bsky.social is mostly right as per usual in his excellent newsletter, but I will say this: I think it’s important to keep pushing hard against data centers *and* I think it’s important to socially stigmatize AI users as big dumb loser assholes. I have confidence in us we can do both
I'm seeing this same argument pop up a lot, particularly in techno-optimist/reactionary-centrist circles. And there are just three quick things I want to say about it:
1. The math on energy and water usage is complicated. (Read Matteo Wong, "The Truth about Al's Water Use" and Alex Reisner,
"Generative Al Is an Engineering Disaster.") It's complicated because an awful lot depends on design choices and cost calculation. You could build a data center that uses basically no water, and that is powered entirely by solar and batteries. But that would cost a lot more money and take a lot more time. The hyperscalers are treating Al as a race, and are burning cash at a phenomenal rate. So of course the actual environmental costs are much higher than the ones calculated by the industry's bloggers-of-choice.
2. Here's something that isn't complicated: the sheer, unprecedented scale of their proposed buildout. The hyperscalers are aiming to build 10 gigawatt data centers. 10 gigawatts of power is around the same energy consumption as New York City during a heat wave. That's... a lot.Mastroianni concludes by arguing for a politics of personal responsibility. He writes:
" am a scientist and a writer, and I'm happy to use A.l. to do my job better: I'll let it write code, fetch articles for me to read or flag errors in statistical analyses for me to investigate further. A.l. is a tool.
Its purpose is to serve our purposes. If it does that well, it might be worth the water and electricity it consumes.
I refuse to let A.l. evolve from a tool into a partner. won't let it write my sentences. I don't share with it my fears, hopes or dreams the way I would with a friend or lover. I don't trust its factual claims unless I can check the sources myself. (...)
It should be humiliating to choose A.l. friendships over human ones. It should be cringe to willingly consume computer-generated slop. Trying to pass off a large language model's words as your own should be seen not just as cheating but also as loser behavior.
It might sound idealistic to suggest that every person has some influence over the future of technology. Yet this has proved true over and over again, even in the recent past. Plenty of expensive tech ventures have failed. They weren't banned, voted out or blocked by zoning laws. They failed because people refused to reward them with time and attention: The Metaverse.
Quibi. Nonfungible tokens. A.l. is unlikely to disappear, but the form it takes is up to us.I'm going to presume this argument is made in good faith. I don't know Mastroianni. Maybe he really is deeply critical of the current trajectory of A.l., and also deeply concerned that the A.I. critics are going about things the wrong way.
But let me just say that his theory-of-change absolutely sucks. The A.I. industry is powerful and fragile. A.I. opponents have landed on a strategy that successfully generates collective action and challenges the industry where it is most vulnerable. And this guy thinks what everyone ought to do instead is focus on their own personal decisions and vague social norms.
The tactic is working. Bad, powerful people are freaked out. Don't listen to their favorite bloggers who say "well, when you think about it from just the right angle, data centers aren't any worse than golf courses."
When you have a tactic that is working, and your opponent doesn't have a good countertactic, the smart move is to keep doing it.

According to Toulouse Oliver, most genuine risks to election integrity involve politically motivated efforts to disenfranchise voters or spread disinformation that influences how people vote. "It's almost impossible to tamper with a voting machine that's actively deployed in an election," she says.

Biscuits and gravy. Like actual biscuits rather than cookies. Look British people you have to understand it’s like of like a savory scone but also not? You guys don’t have an analogue for this. I know that concept is tough for you but this is a totally different thing, it’s not even slightly sweet, it’s basically crispy buttered bread. That’s why putting sausage gravy on it rules. We’re not putting it on cookies. I don’t know how many times I have to explain this

lol remind me of how Ken
klippenstein has specifically been weird to you
He asked how tall I was and would regularly message me to ask if someone was mad at him or if people liked him or if I liked him
It was almost sexual, but not quite...
Honestly, if he'd just hit on me it would've been less weird than this
Lol just asking how tall you were out of the blue?
And yeah that's so, so weird
I think that one was headed towards sexual and that he liked tall girls, but he is married so it wasn't more than that
Just felt like a fetish question, but he did not go beyond that
Plausible deniability
Honestly, the asking if I was mad at him as someone who had never met him before and had way fewer followers than him was way weirder

The left's populism is broken. It generates broken candidates.
Graham Platner is not a bug. He is a feature. A natural result of being mad at elected Democrats for not being able to avoid the consequences of white people's actions in electing majority Republicans. Plus an obsession with the idea that only white men can fix it. (That part is natural because white men are the drivers of said populism.)

SEATTLE -- Belgium coach Rudi Garcia said he thought it was a joke when he first heard news that suspended United States striker Folarin Balogun was cleared to play in its round-of-16 match on Monday, while the Belgian federation announced it was "investigating all potential options" in opposition of FIFA's stunning decision.
"I didn't know that at the World Cup, the 5th of July is actually the first of April -- it's April Fools' [Day]," Garcia said at a news conference Sunday.

This is an unbelievable headshot
Atter some 400 pages, he can't say. "If you truly believe human beings everywhere are just as important as those closest to you, then global injustice might start to feel unbearable," he writes early on. "You may even become willing to sacrifice yourself—or your family—to help people on the other side of the world." As the subject of that sacrifice, Ayers Dohrn is trapped between two possibilities: the first is that none of it was worth it, that his parents were monsters who defaced his childhood for nothing. The second is that it was all worth it, that his birth did not herald the beginning of his parents' world, and that his life was not the central fact of theirs. Of course both possibilities are unbearable. Thus his ambivalence.
