The pinning begins!! Got my tags (will need soooooo may more), finished my design, transfered it to pattern pages over the last two days and so now I get to the fun part: piecing and sewing. New projects are always so exciting!! #quilt #quilting

for my next project, I’m collecting clothing care tags to make quilts & garments. This warehouse graciously lets me sift through donated clothes before they get shredded into insulation and carpet padding. In case you were wondering where your single-use Halloween costume ends up…

ever wondered what you throw away in a year? A friend collected her family’s thin plastic packaging for me for an entire year. The resulting quilt I made is 26-ft wide by 26-ft long at its longest. Always open to collecting someone else’s for a different window into our waste! 🐡🌎 must be CLEAN 🪤🐭
a giant, multicolor crazy quilt made of plastic packaging collected for an entire year from a family of four. It covers an entire wall 26 feet wide with 12 banners starting at the ceiling and unfurling down the wall onto the floor. Titled Year of Plastic, Family of Four by Kalliopi Monoyios.

currently working on expanding this art infographic showing 75+ years of global plastic production - Each quilt represents the amt of virgin #plastic we produced worldwide in a given year. 8 data points take up 18ft of wall—when I show it in 2027 in Tulsa it will be MUCH bigger!! #sciart 🐡🌎
Induced Demand by Kalliopi Monoyios. An art infographic consisting of 8 large circular quilts made from single use plastic. Each quilt is sized according to how may million metric tons of plastic were produced globally in a given year. Each quilt has a colorful center with a thick white border — the color represents approximately 35-40% that was destined for packaging, shorthand for single-use.

confession: I did not watch the halftime show but it’s not because I’m upset about Spanish anything… it’s because I genuinely don’t know how to work my tv!!! (I miss the days when you just turned it on and pressed channel up/down 🤦‍♀️ ) Anyway, I watched it in spirit…
From the 2025 Carbondale Arts dance/fashion fundraiser Camera Obscura: five dancers standing in a line with their right hands on the shoulder of the dancer before them. The leader is a woman staring directly at the camera in a long flowy black dress. the dancers behind have their heads covered by giant open eye sculptures and are looking straight ahead in the direction they’re moving.

can you help me explain what I just saw on the Pacific side of Costa Rica? A shrimp in a tide pool that didn’t match anything that should be in the area. But it sure looks like a spotted bumblebee shrimp to me! iNaturalist is silent for the moment. Anyone know? #marinebiology #mystery #crustacean

New followers, hello! I’m an artist/ science communicator exploring the complexity of our relationship with plastic. below - this #art jacket is made fr 172 single-use #plastic bags signifying whether we use plastic for 30 sec or 30 yrs, it’s ultimately a one way street to trash.

A friend inadvertently named my series of #jewelry made from broken windshield glass when he bought one & included a note for his bestie: “You’re never broken. You are a jewel.” So, introducing the Never Broken series. Join my mail list so you don’t miss the shop drop! www.kalliopimonoyios.com

working on a pattern for these reusable gift bags for a local sustainability workshop I’ll lead in Dec. Made from #upcycled & scrap fabric. Wouldn’t it be fun if it had a gift log like the old library cards that showed how many times a book had been borrowed? #sustainable #reduce #reuse
handmade reusable cloth gift bag with blue denim base and white fabric decorated with fine blue topographic lines. Tied shut with a satin ribbon

progress on this PTFE floss embroidery!! Not only do these take forever (been working on this 3 weeks now) but soon PTFE will disappear from dental floss and these will be collector’s items 😎 Already, I’m stockpiling it like Elaine hoarded the sponge on Seinfeld. Anyone? Anyone? 😬 🐡

Colorado, listen up! Just visited Jesse Mathes’ mid-career retrospective at the Foothills Art Center in Golden, CO and it is a show stopper. If you’re close you must go! Her work should be at the MOMA it is so conceptually and so technically good. Go see!! #art #colorado #jewelry
woman with platinum hair in a simple grey dress with hands on her hips. Her necklace is made of thick copper wire rods that radiate out from her neck and join with four concentric rings that circle her head like a giant collarsix brightly colored collar-style necklaces made from crocheted wire. Think RBG but in vibrant colors

Insta served this up to me this morning. Other countries are courting our scientists with promises of stable funding, secure jobs, and academic freedom. We lose our smartest at our peril. 😔
