Extent of the Jam @extentofthejam.bsky.social · 23hThere’s this lecture. Though slides like this make me always go “but that’s every language”. youtu.be/7PHPQcO0O2Y?... 110
Extent of the Jam @extentofthejam.bsky.social · 08/10/2026Hola from Guadalajara! I’m here with my wife (just out of frame) spending my last few days of being 46 with delicious food and enjoying touring a beautiful old city. Some of the structures here go back to the 1600s. 190
Extent of the Jam @extentofthejam.bsky.social · 07/10/2026Check out this bootlegtastic arcade machine 010
Extent of the Jam @extentofthejam.bsky.social · 06/10/2026Today’s Halloween game is Ghost House, an adorable platform action game based roughly on the arcade game Monster Mash. And it comes on a little card too (eeee!) 020
Extent of the Jam @extentofthejam.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Today it’s Decapattack, an okayish platformer. It’s another throw-your-buddy game, in that Vic Tokai style like Kid Kool and Psycho Fox. Tbh I prefer Psycho Fox, but this one is good too and has huge levels to explore if that’s your thing. There is a related non-horror Japanese game, Magical Hat. 120
Extent of the Jam @extentofthejam.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Next up: More than the sum of its parts, this is a neat early cinematic retro horror experience that i think everyone should at least try. Play the Amiga original, not the ports. I used to play this one with my dad. 120
Extent of the Jam @extentofthejam.bsky.social · 03/10/2026For #RandomGameSaturday I picked Burn:Cycle, a cyberpunk FMV adventure originally for CD-i 3101
Extent of the Jam @extentofthejam.bsky.social · 03/10/2026I’m going to try to post more Halloween-appropriate games, separate from the Random Game Saturday First up: Batman Returns on SMS. It’s similar to the GG version and is a pretty good platformer that plays a bit like the GG Shinobis. 170
Extent of the Jam @extentofthejam.bsky.social · 02/10/2026Since Impossible Mission 3’s map is mostly static, I’ve been trying to route it. I wonder if the keys pop up in the same general zones each time. Here’s what I’ve got so far: 000
Extent of the Jam @extentofthejam.bsky.social · 02/10/2026I stumbled upon an It Came From the Desert! manual today while looking for something else. I’d never actually opened the booklet, and was pleasantly surprised to find pulp comic panels on almost every page. Good timing; I watched Them! the other day for the first time (loved it). 030
Extent of the Jam @extentofthejam.bsky.social · 01/10/2026Happy October! Here are some pre-crash Halloween games to try out :) name in alt tag 161
Extent of the Jam @extentofthejam.bsky.social · 30/09/2026Ooh there’s a movie one. I’m going with these 130
Extent of the Jam @extentofthejam.bsky.social · 28/09/2026Happy #ScanlineSunday. I enjoy Impossible Mission 3’s title screen homage to Rolling Thunder. The scientists are pulling out what is left of their hair and when you hit start, your sunglassed hero runs in. Awesome. Very nice pixel art as well. Have a couple logos, too. 1172
Extent of the Jam @extentofthejam.bsky.social · 28/09/2026I was at High Scores in Alameda a couple weeks back and they had an Oregon Trail emulator machine that I switched over to Lemonade 110
Extent of the Jam @extentofthejam.bsky.social · 28/09/2026Drop some artwork (from a movie I take it) 020
Extent of the Jam @extentofthejam.bsky.social · 27/09/2026Ok, Impossible Mission III is the same map each time, it’s only the items which are shuffled. This is both good and bad. The good is it means you can route it. The bad is one of the best parts of the original was it changed up the behavior of every robot and shuffled every room between plays… 100
Extent of the Jam @extentofthejam.bsky.social · 26/09/2026Impossible Mission 3 necessitates a lot of backtracking because of all the keys and other basically-keys items and has a propensity for layouts with tons of tiny elevator shafts. Maybe if it had an occasional teleport or was divided into smaller sections you solve it’d be much improved. 330
Extent of the Jam @extentofthejam.bsky.social · 26/09/2026Today’s #RandomGameSaturday is Koronis Rift, a LucasArts game about being an intergalactic scavenger. I’ve never really gotten into this one but it looks neat. It’s the last game to use their (quite astounding) realtime fractal 3d graphics engine (which has a Star Trek II special fx connection) 1112
Extent of the Jam @extentofthejam.bsky.social · 25/09/2026I learned today that there are people who play Impossible Mission and wait until they have *all* the pieces to even touch the puzzles. That’s restraint. Also this version is messed up, even past the “actually impossible” part. 151
Extent of the Jam @extentofthejam.bsky.social · 25/09/2026I wonder if Psycho Fox influenced Sonic at all. They’re both momentum-y with splitting levels 021
Extent of the Jam @extentofthejam.bsky.social · 22/09/2026Sure doesn’t look like just linear algebra to me 000
Extent of the Jam @extentofthejam.bsky.social · 21/09/2026Hey #ScanlineSunday, here’s a demo effect I did on the Atari 2600 about 15 years ago. There is a second effect but I need to fix the tv timing because it rolls on this display. 38112
Extent of the Jam @extentofthejam.bsky.social · 20/09/2026Popping back in quickly for #RandomGameSaturday. Here's Karous, the final official Dreamcast game. Coming after Radilgy, it's another artsy cel shaded shooter, but this time it's less goofy and more gothy. Like Radilgy, I think it can also be found on that Wii Milestone shooters collection. 0132
Extent of the Jam @extentofthejam.bsky.social · 06/09/2026One thing I love about the Atari 2600 is that each game design has to be boiled down to the essence, given the severe limitations of the system. And the limits are really interesting and unusual. E.g. there are reasons you tend to see objects in equally spaced triplets and things move in rows. 1204
Extent of the Jam @extentofthejam.bsky.social · 05/09/2026Happy #RandomGameSaturday! Here is Strategy X, a mediocre port of a mediocre arcade game. But: the cart is unusual (a bit longer than the standard 2600 cart and with a rounded edge). And you can see the old 1970s Konami logo. Bonus: Sky Skipper, the only port of a canceled Nintendo arcade game. 091
Extent of the Jam @extentofthejam.bsky.social · 04/09/2026Here’s an approximation. I kind of want to dig into the original source but I also think this is good enough to proceed with the game design. 021
Extent of the Jam @extentofthejam.bsky.social · 04/09/2026The room generator in The Towering Inferno on 2600 is interesting, and it works very well with the gameplay which forces you into a lot of side to side movement. I wonder if it’s that parts of the room toggle on or off, or if each room is split into 3 or so vertical sections. 141
Extent of the Jam @extentofthejam.bsky.social · 01/09/2026The rectangle-based 3d in Blaster (1983) is so trippy and cool 041
Extent of the Jam @extentofthejam.bsky.social · 30/08/2026Happy #scanlinesunday. Here’s The Towering Inferno on Atari 2600. I love how the flames move. As usual on 2600, everything is fairly row-oriented. That flashing following by the noise is someone succumbing to the flames (you have to reach the white square where people are huddled) 0225
Extent of the Jam @extentofthejam.bsky.social · 29/08/2026Happy #RandomGameSaturday! This is Maken X, a first person slash em up about a sentient psychic sword. It’s a neat off-beat game. I guess it’s in the Shin Megami Tensei series? Or adjacent. 0111
Extent of the Jam @extentofthejam.bsky.social · 28/08/2026 X-Men vs. Street Fighter on Saturn was a big deal back in the day 171
Extent of the Jam @extentofthejam.bsky.social · 27/08/2026I rocked pretty far into Battle Garegga with no rank control. I think maybe Souky trained me. I never used to like this one. 151
