Huge update! JIT compiled rasterizer now have a friend. :) #CyberVGA v1.8 software raytracer+gi (multi-core x64 JIT, no GPU). Still interactive with the L1-SH grid and coarse-LOD octree bounces. Split wipe against the 8-bit JIT rasterizer shows the difference. #indiedev #enginedev #raytracing

Thank you! What really amazes me that I can inject any shading / filtering algorithm, as long as I don’t bloat the registers, with almost no cost in terms of cpu cycles.

I've been studying Just In Time compiled loops and implemented that to my rasterizer. Result is a new permutation based shading system for #CyberVGA. Currently I'm experimenting with PBR materials. Update is really soon. expfunction.itch.io/cybervga #gamedev #indiedev #retrodev

For 486, Pentium class I completely dropped perspective division. Lately I’ve discovered just in time compiled unrolled loops and applied that to my span rasterizer. With it I can implement popular shading features to my triangles with no branching or other extra cycles. Really effective.

That’s great, 16-bit integer coded IBM style font caught my eyes instantly. 😄 I’m also developing a game engine check it out if you have time. expfunction.itch.io/cybervga Which platforms are you targeting and which optimization techniques you used for software rasterizer?

Every week someone ships a “retro engine.” It’s a 32-bit RGBA framebuffer. A CRT shader. A palette LUT they applied after the fact. Then they call it #retro but what it actually is a Instagram filter. Join my journey if you’re bored of filters! #indiedev #gamedev expfunction.itch.io/cybervga

A screen with the title "Heliocentrism." Made with a CGA 16-color retro style. Featuring the sun in the center, with clouds on either side. Pod, the main character, is standing on the cloud to the right.A screen titled "Hopscotch." It features a gap between two platforms, with flying enemies in that gap. Pod is jumping across the gap by bouncing on their heads.

Currently it renders 200 individual grass blades with occasional fps drops on Win64 port. On DOS however, things are bit much simpler. 50 blades would do the trick I think. I’m thinking about a radial parameter to grass generator and multiply that with inverse depth value.

Novus Idea @expfunction.bsky.social · 07/07/2026
It immediately shows the dithering pattern and banding at oblique view angles of course but I believe blade animation is helping a lot to cover that up. Also I will tweak the density and make it proportional to depth value expecting more natural look.
