I legitimately don't understand how anyone thinks they can "control" a superintelligence. Either it's not really a superintelligence or you're not really in control.

Guys if you are sharing a NY Post headline deliberately mischaracterizing an out of context Hillary Clinton quote from a podcast to make it sound like she's attacking the left, *she* is not the one who is hurting her own side

Part of the problem is that they have you blaming Schumer (who has no majority) instead of Thune (who does). It’s underappreciated how thoroughly the Left has been propagandized.

The market for apps that are basically "This existing software, but how it was 5-8 years ago" is functionally infinite at this point. Every Office app. The entire Adobe suite. It's open season. Hell, ATP tech babble aside, 95 % of Bluesky users are here because it's Twitter with less bullshit

There are several non coders in that thread, who built apps. Really interesting.

Yes mens clothing absolutely evolved. And you don't have to go particularly far back! I had a pair of shoes very close to these:

That is a good point. I'd say "Socially imposed but personally adapted" describes more than a few things. Masculinity, attractiveness, success come to mind. You can feel attractive without strictly adhering to society's definition of attractiveness. I think the same is true of masculinity.

I've been on both sides. I was a slightly built nerd (hence the boxing), then had a huge growth spurt. Please don't take me as condoning (or even judging) any part of that. I'm just trying to identify it.

"Prince could show up at your party, in frills, and steal your girlfriend. Then steal her clothes, then steal someone else's girl in your girlfriends clothes.” 😊

That said, I realize there's going to be one "accepted" societal judgement, and I don't think long hair is at all disqualifying. A lot of metal bands had long hair. Prince was considered very masculine by many (although not all).

This stuff is so complicated. personally I make a distinction between "What IS masculinity" and "How do you define YOUR masculinity?". I'm uncomfortable with any sort of externally imposed definition. I think there could be as many definitions of masculinity as there are men.

Hi, Bluesky. Our friends from @cpsc.gov said we should join. Our memes are less unhinged but we try to be funny sometimes. What we really want to do is make sure workers know their rights and employers understand their responsibilities — and where they can go for help with a workplace issue.

So true. I briefly signed up with a “financial advisory” startup last year and the whole thing just oozed “least effort for greatest return”. I actually admired the business model (from a technocratic perspective), but it wasn’t terribly useful.

No I get that 100%. I guess the question is, “who gets to validate your definition of yourself?” If I say “Men define themselves as having short hair”, is it fair to say “No, they cannot define themselves that way.”? I would say it’s not fair.

In other words, is that trait now inaccessible as part of male definition?
100
oldest_sql_user @exodyne.bsky.social · 17/01/2025
No argument their definitions are based on social expectations. But if we agree that men (and women) define themselves, how do we get to excluding any particular trait from that definition? If I say “Men define themselves as X”, and you say “X is universal”, does that change anything?
100
oldest_sql_user @exodyne.bsky.social · 17/01/2025
Do you think men (or women) define themselves in any way?

oldest_sql_user @exodyne.bsky.social · 17/01/2025
Definitely not. The proposition “Given that I am a man, kinetic action is important to me” isn’t the same as “Given that kinetic action is important to me, I am a man”. Mind you, even as a man my opinion on men could be wrong, I wouldn’t presume to define women.

I’m saying that sense of being a protector *feels* manly. Is it possible to feel masculine , or feel feminine ? Are both illusory?

That mirrors my view. I’ll know AI tooling has arrived when we see a bunch of AAA games built for fractions of normal cost in fractions of normal time.

Fantastic article! Also: “[Big hype] reflects a pattern we’ve observed repeatedly in AI tooling. Social media excitement and company valuations have minimal relationship to real-world utility. We’ve found the most reliable signal comes from detailed stories of users shipping products and services”

Dems have *never* wavered from the message that the economy is strong, but the prevailing drumbeat was exactly the opposite. UNTIL Trump was elected, now the economy is a non-issue. I just don’t see that Dems have enough *clout* to drive coverage, esp now that Twitter has become a RW amplifier.

oldest_sql_user @exodyne.bsky.social · 17/01/2025
To be clear I’m saying that IMO men don’t define themselves as “not-women”. They define themselves as wielders of…let’s call it “strength” instead of “violence”. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that both Joe Rogan and Andrew Tate are MMA-adjacent, with large male followings. /2

oldest_sql_user @exodyne.bsky.social · 17/01/2025
I don’t necessarily disagree with “inherently toxic”, I just think violence is so baseline it’s a meaningless distinction. Superheroes, for example. Literally run around beating people up. I’m also a little concerned that you say “women can do all that”, because it implies I said they couldn’t. /1

The media decides how or if a story propagates. Until the Dems have a pravda machine like Fox, that will remain true. Name a Republican who suffered anything like "But her emails". We can't just "message" our way out of press malfeasance.

I couldn't say. I learned to box when I was young, and then got into Aikido in college. Is that inherently toxic? You probably can't find a AAA game where you're not killing something. At some point it's just cultural. My main point was that it's not necessarily defined in opposition to femininity.

Personally, I might have said most men model their masculinity around a core of real or implied violence. But that could just be the men I know. /3

oldest_sql_user @exodyne.bsky.social · 17/01/2025
My masculinity is very much tied up in things like kinetic action, protection and control. I'm not trying to say #NotAllMen, but I think the "defined in opposition to the feminine" idea is worth confirming as it doesn't ring true for me. /2
