The crowdfunder has already enabled us to place a retainer with a barrister who will help us make the legal case for Dryden Road to be kept safe for cycling. This means we've reserved the services of a barrister experienced in active travel cases.

“Dutch people cycle an average of 2.6km each per day. If this pattern was replicated worldwide, annual carbon emissions would drop by 686 million tonnes. This mammoth figure exceeds the entire carbon footprint of most countries, including the UK, Canada, Saudi Arabia and Australia.” @euronews.com

Cycling like the Dutch would slash the world’s carbon footprint
If everybody cycled like the Dutch, we could offset the UK or Australia’s entire carbon footprint.

“We took the children off the roads. In 1971, 80% of seven and eight year olds got to school on their own. By 1990 it was 9%, and the fall has not stopped: more children are driven than ever, and cycling to school still barely registers. We did not defeat the danger. We surrendered to it.”

Devon County Council are looking to make a strategic cycle route in Exeter more dangerous, and using funds allocated to active travel to pay for it. Please consider donating to our crowdfunder, which will help us with legal action against this outrageous plan.

This would effectively sever the E9, which is a vital part of Exeter's adopted transport strategy. We have been working with a national legal firm with a track record of successful cases involving road safety.

It's possible Devon County Council will soon soon issue a Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) for consultation which would lead to the removal of the filter on Dryden Road without any measures in place to ensure the safety of people cycling.

We’re now in a situation where Devon County Council is planning to change one of its key cycling routes that will introduce a much higher risk of serious injury or death for cyclists.
110
Exeter Cycling Campaign @exetercycling.bsky.social · 19/08/2026
The particular risk is that of ‘shunt’ or ‘clip’ collisions, where motor vehicles come into conflict with cyclists from behind or from alongside respectively, leading to serious injury or death.
110
Exeter Cycling Campaign @exetercycling.bsky.social · 19/08/2026
A Critical Safety Issue is "a street layout or condition that is associated with an increased risk of collisions for people walking, wheeling or cycling". The issue they identify covers the risk of collisions between motor vehicles and cyclists, where cyclists are not protected from motor traffic.

Some of those will be children and young people who can’t drive. Some of them will be disabled people who can’t drive. Restoring car danger to this route will simply discourage many people from cycling. For others, it will put them at much greater risk of being hit by a car driver whilst cycling.
