Here’s the most incredible story you’ll read today. A small plane with four people aboard crashes in a field. Another pilot witnesses it. That pilot happens to be flying a bunch of skydivers. They offer to jump to assist, are given permission. The skydivers happen to be EMTs. Everyone survives.

It took a heck of a push from some persistent friends to get me to make that first phone call. But dang is it worth it. So, you know... But hey, I'm just some critter on the Internet.

My brain was too much. My skills undeveloped, and my responsibilities too great. I'm doing less now than I was in my 20s, but more fully. I'm present with my friends in a way that feels whole for the first time in my life.

I know that feeling. The burning in the back of my brain when I would get an IM from someone who might demand something of me. It took me five years to start therapy, and another two to seek medication, as well as stepping down from two con staff roles that had been a core part of my identity.

Getting emotionally stepped on by an abusive mommy figure IS what I secretly believe I deserve, but that's different than actually getting it. (Tbc, my actual mom is a wonderful lady who I love very much)

Which was really mean, but goes a long way to explain why my experiments in trying to elicit the falling in love route ended in me getting the most brutal roast of my life that perfectly articulated my unspoken insecurities with detached disdain.

I was talking about this with my boyfriend the other day and he said "that only happens to people who secretly think they're special, not someone with deep-seated suspicion of anyone saying nice things about them."

Getting marshmallow-mogged by your entire bench of emotional support characters over your cereal preferences is devastating. Wishing you a speedy recovery.
