The only ethical action is to take the funding that RFK Jr has given for this proposed trial and use it to give the birth dose to as many newborns as possible RFK Jr is an anti-vaccine eugenicist with zero expertise in pediatrics, vaccination, clinical trials, ethics, or equipoise

Further, this is FL where folks with a bit of $ for a new system are more likely to plan for extended outages. Not sure what uptake would be in places that (seem more likely to) have less catastrophic weather.

No, I don’t think so. I live in FL and while relatively a lot of people - including me - have solar, I’m not sure absolute numbers are that high (but they could be!). And then, only a fraction of those have battery back up. I don’t, although I believe it may not be that hard to install.

(So, in theory such a house isn’t depending on the grid being up.)

I think in some cases solar systems come with batteries for the home (so the home has its own power).

13 Monsters Good And True I think there are so many genuine monsters in the world that I am consoling myself by drawing little monsters who are good.
Drawing of 13 little 'monsters', rather cute little critters who wouldn't harm a fly, in fact they'd probably give it a bowl of milk and a tiny bed for the night.

Were all Ground Rounds the same layout etc? I’m from Bangor, Maine and I have exceptionally fond memories of kid birthday parties (mine and others’) there. The popcorn! Parents not around! Silent movie on the one wall! What a way to spend an early afternoon.

It's uncomfortable, but cars have helped ruin the Maine landscape. In cities, in towns, and in our countryside. All because of government subsidies. Does the Amtrak Downeaster receive state and fed assistance? You bet. Do you park for free in downtown Belfast or Rockland, Maine? Yes.

This is Maeve. She may be the sweetest, most good natured, most trusting dog I have ever met. She was abandoned in DC last week, and since I’m not able to adopt a dog now, I had to turn her over to the Brandywine Animal Shelter. I want to make sure this absolute delight of a dog finds a good home.

You can have lots of arguments about if Jeffries should have forced a vote on Massie's impeachment resolution, but that was a choice. He could have done it. Johnson's procedural gambit only worked with Jeffries' passive acquiescence.

In almost every study showing harms of genAI in education, authors feel compelled to say “while there are benefits” but never offer citations. Does anyone know of a good scientific study that shows lasting benefits to learning, thinking, and development from LLM genAI products in the classroom?

Welp, there it is. The CDC is now officially manipulating data and their count of measles deaths in 2026 now stands at ZERO. My understanding of reportable diseases is that the CDC would usually use a state health department’s determination as the final say. The new CDC Director is failing us.

The CDC left two measles-associated Pa. deaths out of its latest count after RFK Jr. sparred with Gov. Shapiro
HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has accused Pennsylvania of not cooperating with the CDC in its handling of a measles outbreak.

I think the 1:1 vehicle to population growth (per Wikipedia) is equally interesting. Especially in a city of that size.

Abbott blocks state agencies from spending money on Flock cameras
The order came as The Texas Tribune was preparing to publish an investigation detailing how a state agency has devoted at least $30 million to building the state’s Flock surveillance network.

Y'all. I know you're tired of my running on about this, and I *want* to give you a break over the weekend, but I CAN'T fail these cats. They need a HOME. They're affectionate, relaxed and in decent health, and their issues are MINOR and EASILY MANAGEABLE. All we need is to find That Person.

For me, that weakness is particularly apparent where the public is apt to pick up some part of the ER costs for cyclists who haven’t mitigated injuries by wearing helmets. Which is sort of the point for me. I wear a helmet because I think I’m likely to crash if I bike a lot and prefer less injury.
Photo from an emergency room in 2016 or 2017 showing a helmet that is cracked. It cracked when the poster (I) hit the pavement in a non-vehicle related crash.

Liz D. @ewdowney.bsky.social · 27/08/2026
This (“more bodies on the pavement”) is awfully attenuated. NYC also has a dense and well-used mass transit system as alternative for riders who can’t stomach a helmet. I think it’s a weak argument (although I don’t think it’s inaccurate) for being blasé about helmet mandates.
