I guess I'm late to the party in seeing the parallels between Green Lantern and E.E. Doc Smith's Lensman series. Turns out the modern Green Lantern concept (from the late 50s forward) was lifted generously from the Lensman. Pulp Science Fiction FTW!

I bought John Stewart's origin story at the local 7-11 for 25 cents. John was a much more militant character befitting the turbulent early 70s. Very heavy on the Black Power significance of "Beware my Power."
