This paragraph is the most perfect Matt Levine para ever. It has everything that defines Matt Levineyness.

Well, that was a very enjoyable 30 hours of Lego construction. Highly recommended. On a cost per hour of entertainment basis…not bad.

This paragraph describes one of the primary problems with the UK economy and explains many of the post 2007 difficulties.
History gives sobering context. House price growth from the end of the second world war to the end of the 198os could be described as steady and unspectacular, followed by a dip in the early 1990s and then a sudden, dizzying rise which took the average price from a shade more than £50,000 in 1995 to £190,000 in
2007. This 280 per cent jump in 12 years, driven by a heady mix of low interest rates, the banking sector's addiction to mortgage finance, a rising population and the increasing perception of homes as investment assets, reshaped the economy and embedded a popular belief that the way to make money in Britain was to buy property.

I see The Crypto is back to its old tricks. “Up to 13% annual interest” where the “up to” is doing a lot of heavy lifting… “Earn 13% interest with a significant chance of vaporising your entire stake” really doesn’t sound so good does it.

Also, it’s scary how late expected gender roles changed. 1989 and the women are still guides and nurses at Sellafield…

H/t to @mayfaircynic.bsky.social who suggested the Secret Maps exhibit at the British Library. Where else would you see a beautiful map of the world, an Enigma Machine, an AirTag and Lady Mountbatten’s underpants.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Although you have to be a little bit of a #Linguistics geek to get into it, the human history which is unveiled by the development of proto Indo-European was completely new to me and utterly fascinating.

I have just finished this book and I highly recommend it. The solid history and scientific rigour sensitively blended with the human stories. I visited Pripyat and Chernobyl in 2013 so it has extra resonance for me. This is an event which changed the course of energy policy for good and for bad.

This (from the FT) seems to suggest that tobacco duties already contribute £1 trillion to Treasury. Unless it’s a *total* of £8bn rather than a *extra* £8bn.

Sure, sometimes they get involved in high-profile projects like ambitious mass relocation programmes or daring pharmaceutical sales initiatives. But most of the work seems to revolve around 30-something MBAs too dim for private equity being parachuted into multinational businesses or sprawling government departments to tell the bosses what they should already know. And that seems to be a generous interpretation.
