Conspicuously absent from their list of modifiable risk factors is catching viruses like covid over and over. This is not something you have no control over. Wear a well-fitting N95 type mask when sharing air with people you don't live with, and around them too if anyone's sick/been exposed.

My mom does this not infrequently, and she's acts like she's ashamed when she tells me about it, but I think she's actually bragging somehow.

Since you mentioned getting just 1 shingles vax, if it was Zostavax, I read protection was ~68% the 1st year, 50% 2nd year, & ⬇️⬇️⬇️ after that. Shingrix is much better, but you have to get both shots. Thx for sharing your experience. Hope you don't get any more flare-ups, & glad the others were mild!

EvolutionaryEve @evolutionaryeve.bsky.social · 20/08/2026
Were you talking abt being vaxxed for shingles? I noticed your bio says you still mask (yay!), so obviously you're aware that the covid vax doesn't prevent infection. So sorry to hear about the multiple shingles episodes. Do you know/have a suspicion of what caused them?

Whether this is part of the reasoning or not, "booster" implies a need to "top off" one's dwindling immunity. As sorry as uptake is, I think it may be even lower if ppl just hear "vaccine" & then think, "Well I've already had a covid vaccine [5 years ago], so I don't need to get that."

2/ I'd really like to be able to get a PlusLife system/tests (another brand of NAATs), but we can't get them in the US now. Last I looked, the reader was $300, but the tests were only abt $10, so much cheaper in the long run. I really hope they become available here again.

EvolutionaryEve @evolutionaryeve.bsky.social · 16/08/2026
Yeah, pretty much. My family uses Metrix covid tests (made by Aptitude Medical), which are nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs) & have sensitivity & specificity similar to a lab PCR test. The reader, which you use over & over, is US $50, & tests are $25. Not cheap, but much more accurate. ⬇️

Yep. Btw, the study referenced in the article is just the latest of many that have been discussing this for some time now, as those who keep up with covid info know. Glad ABC is running a story on it & hope the trend continues. Covid will mess you up in all kinds of ways, vaxxed or not. Mask up.

The vaccines are still doing the same thing they've been doing, which is greatly reducing risk of death or hospitalization during the acute phase of infection. They do not prevent infection, transmission, or long covid. There is a *modest* decrease in infection risk for a couple of months post vax.

2/ To clarify, seniors who've been getting out around a lot of other people (socializing) over the past 6 yrs prob no longer have as much of an advantage over those who've been staying home, bc the ones getting out have prob had more covid infections. Big increase in dementia risk from C19.

If you click through to the article in the Journal of the Alzheimer's Association & look at their methods, you'll see that they used data from 2011-2019. That's pre-covid. I'd be real curious to see the picture painted by data gathered from 2020 to now. Even "mild" C19 infections can harm the brain.

I love the "Keep getting infected and we'll get more data" response. That really puts things in a certain light for your interlocutor! How did this person respond to the things you told them?

I'm in the US, but the one I use is the Halyard Fluidshield N95. Duckbills are also referred to as "pouch" style masks, so that might bring up more search results for you. They are decidedly not "cool" looking, but I've developed a certain stoicism about it. 😄

I 💚 where your ❤️ is at on this. Just a reminder: being vaxxed is great for ⬇️ your own risk of death/hospitalization from the acute infection, but it does *not* prevent infection or transmission. It slightly ⬇️ risk of infection for a short time. Respirators are great for protecting yourself & others.

3/ Also worth mentioning that many (if not most) ppl who have either long covid or other sequelae from a covid infection are not identifying their problems as such, ie, covid-related. Someone saying they don't know anyone w/LC is meaningless w/o knowing that person's entire health status.
110
EvolutionaryEve @evolutionaryeve.bsky.social · 05/08/2026
2/ If it doesn't occur to ppl to bring up health issues during an actual appt w/a healthcare provider, why would anyone think they'd bring that stuff up in casual social conversation? Yes, ppl will often mention things if someone else brings it up first, but otherwise you prob won't hear abt it.⬇️

Going to add that it's not always even abt someone feeling unsafe revealing that info (though that def. happens too). My HCW spouse frequently has to ask patients a lot of very pointed/spec questions, bc they will straight up not think abt mentioning relevant surgeries, pain, illnesses, etc.⬇️

And with years of data and literally hundreds of thousands of studies that have now been done on covid, it's clear that C19 absolutely is a direct physical threat to children's long-term health.
010
EvolutionaryEve @evolutionaryeve.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
I'll add that we actually *do* know at least some of the long-term consequences of covid, including potential damage to nearly every body system (esp areas w/ACE2 receptors), incl the brain, kidneys, heart & vasculature, lungs, etc. This isn't limited to severe acute cases, either.
030
EvolutionaryEve @evolutionaryeve.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
Also worth noting that plenty of research shows that even asymptomatic infections do NOT equate to no negative sequelae. Asymptomatic covid infection frequently leads to damage to the vasculature, heart, lung, kidney, brain, etc.

Thank you! Yes, just using primary texts is pretty much what I kept seeing when searching online for that info. My son mostly reads the original material & also listens to some college lectures online, but I didn't know if there were other texts we should be using. I appreciate the recommendation!

I mask in all indoor public spaces, but YES, I always think the same thing abt public restrooms now! Even if we got a truly sterilizing vaccine for covid, or even for every possible illness, I don't want to inhale all the nastiness that gets aerosolized with every flush! How were we ever ok w/that?

2/ My fam & I all had multiple days of side effects from the mRNA shots, incl fever, fatigue, headache, & soreness/swelling at the injection site, which we were willing to deal with, but we haven't had all that w/Novavax. Novavax also confers more durable immunity, apparently.
