Taking a moment to appreciate the beauty of Merle Oberon (1911-1979)🖤 Merle Oberon, Sunday News, 1943 Photographed by Harry Wernecke.
Photo portrait of Anglo-Indian actress Merle Oberon taken in 1943, in Kodachrome. Oberon is facing the camera, with shoulders at 3/4 turn, wearing a black velvet blazer with a purple ruffle collar under it. She’s wearing a dramatic light colored net veil framing her face, decorated with light blue and pink flower pins on her dark brown hair. She’s photographed against a light green pastel background.

William Merrit Chase (1849 - 1916), American seems to have been quite fond of ladies in black as he painted several, like this one, in the Met collection: www.metmuseum.org/art/collecti...

It's #caturday and I miss our old man, Smiglet. We had to say goodbye on NYE, after two difficult weeks of kitty home hospice. He died peacefully, at 17ish, of heart failure due to congenital cardiomyopathy. He was the best old judgy cat man & the most distinguished personality. I miss him dearly 💔

Petition to remove the aristocratic title bit from 'landLORD' and 'landLADY" to remind them that tenants are not actually their subjects. Considering landhoarder, wage-sucker, or maybe rent-leech as alternatives, but they don't quite roll off the tongue 🤔 Suggestions welcome!

The cystoscope in the meme is obviously a rigid one, but I'm annoyed to not be able to find the original source of the illustration and the exact model. Here's a similar one of a flexible cystoscope applied to both typical sets of urinary organs:

A cystoscope is an endoscope - a tool to see inside the body using a thin tube & a light source, at its simplest form. The first endoscope was invented by German physician Phillip Bozzini in 1807. It looked even less friendly than the cystoscope in the meme 😬 www.researchgate.net/publication/...

This is what I wrote on the forum btw, and while I did there was a fleeting moment where I thought, ‘is this professional enough?’ The sheer absurdity of having to even consider appearing professional while human beings are deliberately and systematically being starved to death, is maddening.

Random curious tidbit I just stumbled upon while looking for historical remedies for hysteria in an 1872 issue of the Chemist & Druggist serial on @archive.org 🐈‍⬛ 🩸🩸🩸Published under the ‘Gossip’ column. #medicalhumanities #folkmedicine #historyofmedicine #donttrythisathome
Clipping from The Druggist and Chemist, 1872 that reads:

“Mrs. Margaret Carr, of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, bought a black cat for the purpose of taking three drops of blood from it to be administered to a grandchild suffering from croup. Thereupon her neighbours raised a tumult, charging her with witchcraft, and she was obliged to call upon the authorities for protection. Mr. William Owens, her lawyer, brought twenty witnesses to prove that the child recovered the moment the dose of blood was administered.”
