I don't mind the approach so much (although like a lot of series it feels bloated) but that performance is a real problem.

Overall I like Zoe Kazan's adaptation of "East of Eden" but I am not sold on a key piece of the show: Florence Pugh's performance. It has all the outside markers of "brave" and "committed" acting but lacks…something, maybe a feral need that doesn't feel like a calculated choice.

I find it striking (but not surprising considering what VF is) that Guidicci is 1) unable to admit that some people ARE demonstrably bad and 2) that not give them oxygen is an option.

Due to the vagaries of scheduling I have three pieces in this Sunday's Arts & Leisure section, and they're all online already. First is this piece about the historic opera houses of Maine, which I researched on a road trip this summer: www.nytimes.com/2026/09/29/a...

With a distinctly American vision of communal life and entertainment, these theaters have survived fires and floods because they were always about more than classical music.

I used to go the first week with the grounds ticket. Now those are snatched up right away and turn up on resale at inflated prices. City Hall should make the USTA pay to resurface every public court in the city. I play on them and most are in terrible shape.

The comparison with airports is spot-on. And all this is orchestrated by a non-profit using property built on a city park. Then the USTA has the gall to say they offer free tickets — yeah, during the so-called fan week before the proper tournament starts!

Among the issues in that piece is that it makes assumptions about, for example, the playwrights' intentions and the make-up of the audience (like, for example, that in "Birthright" Chaya is meant to be the audience stand-in).
