I also think that when one has cherished something for a long time, any new addition to it can feel a little jarring. And maybe some parts still will over time, and other parts will not, and it's all okay, actually.

So probably, the leak is actually all their dirty voice notes, not emails. *Or,* the Richards campaign hacked the server and found nothing of interest (because the voice notes are in some app) and so *they* ghost wrote fake emails for a fake leak to back up their picture of firstprince kissing.

There are definitely royal aides ghost writing statements etc. for Henry, but let's say they stay out of the emails. Because now that I think about it, they'd rely on voice notes! It's also something one can answer when one has time, which is great for different time zones, but requires no writing.

However Henry is still sharp, witty, and a good conversationalist - Alex still falls in love with all of that. But they can't email the way they do in canon. Maybe they give text-too-speech a go but the formatting is clunky and it keeps getting stuff wrong.

I think probably the way I'd spin it is, they sent Henry on so many royal engagements in childhood, he missed too much of school and so he never learned to read. He hid it really well for a long time and by the time the crown clocked it, they were more interested in hiding scandal than helping him.

with the way I thought about it, he never learned! it felt like the easiest way to explain why he wouldn't enjoy it. he doesn't know how. really does explain how he let them put Dickens as his fave author. and 'studying English at Oxford'? a cover up! the emails were ghost written by a royal aide

IN MY DEFENCE l was thinking about the things we all suspend our disbelief for in fic (Henry suddenly being a great singer, etc.) and the things we don't change (Alex loves coffee! Henry loves reading! holy truths) and was pondering an AU where Henry *doesn't* love reading... so: Henry can't read

Henry is so beautiful.

Broad shoulders, strong arms, and a soft spot right at the dip of his waist. Miles and miles of utterly flawless skin. Deep blue eyes that pierce Alex's with an intensity Alex hadn't known to expect.

It's like he sees into Alex's soul, or something.

Henry is laid out on a padded bench, hands trapped in leather cuffs above his head and legs forced apart by unforgiving ropes. He's not gone easy on himself. It's practically an all access pass to his most vulnerable parts. If Alex was gonna offer himself to someone the way Henry will tonight, he'd probably have started a lot smaller.

Only one way to honor commitment like that.

so while he can't talk to Henry at all, he can in fact talk to Cash. just being friendly. making Cash's loop around the lecture hall less boring. before long, they're trading jokes. by midterms, Alex is asking about Cash's nieces. come Christmas, they've a secret handshake.

and here's where it gets even more fun: Alex had security for a little while when his mom almost got the nomination for president. it's exactly why he knows not to rant about the monarchy to Henry's face. but he also understands the security guy's job. knows how monotone and boring it can get.

but here's where it gets fun: Alex has no idea how to talk to Henry. he's infuriated and a little turned on by how Henry holds his own in class, but doesn't trust himself to speak without causing Henry's security detail to kick him out. so he clams up. bolts as soon as class ends. they don't chat.
