Super cool! Let me know how it goes :)

I don't know about foreign language speakers, but yes there's actually quite a rich literature on cognitive effort and brain criticality! Lots of info in our discussion

7/7 🧘 Basically, we don't just ask "what does the brain do during meditation?" Meditation is more nuanced than that! We ask "how do brain changes relate to the *experience* of meditation?" Crucially - measures of experience are critical (ha!) to integrate in the neuroscience of consciousness
120
Evan Lewis-Healey @evanlhealey.bsky.social · 25/08/2026
6/7 🏄This suggests criticality may track the moment-to-moment experience of “letting go”, rather than meditation as a coarse-grained state — potentially reflecting more fluid, flexible and computationally efficient brain dynamics.

Evan Lewis-Healey @evanlhealey.bsky.social · 25/08/2026
5/7 🌊 The interesting result emerged when we incorporated subjective experience. As meditation became more effortless, the brain moved closer to criticality. This relationship was strong in meditators, but practically absent in controls(!)
130
Evan Lewis-Healey @evanlhealey.bsky.social · 25/08/2026
4/7 ⚖️ But treating meditation as an overall “state” told us surprisingly little. When we compared TM with a control task, we found no robust group differences in criticality between meditators and controls.

Evan Lewis-Healey @evanlhealey.bsky.social · 25/08/2026
3/7 🧠 First, experienced meditators showed closer-to-critical brain dynamics *during* meditation compared with when they were at rest. So critical dynamics appear to change as a function of TM practice.

Evan Lewis-Healey @evanlhealey.bsky.social · 25/08/2026
2/7 You can read the paper here: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6... Overall, we used high-density EEG + time-resolved reports of subjective experience (TET) to study experienced Transcendental Meditation (TM) practitioners and matched controls. Three findings stood out 👇

Ever wondered what happens in the brain when meditation becomes effortless? 🧠 In the first paper from my postdoc, we investigated the neurophenomenology of brain criticality — a state poised between order and disorder, thought to support flexible and efficient information processing 🧵 1/7

I think until we start measuring interoception in the wild, close in time to symptoms, we are likely to keep finding this null association. We increasingly think of interoception more as a dynamic, psychophysiological state that is highly subject to contextual manipulation, rather than as a trait.

New preprint! 🧠 Our mind wanders at rest. By periodically probing ongoing thoughts during resting-state fMRI, we show these thoughts are reflected in brain network dynamics and contribute to pervasive links between functional brain architecture and everyday behavior (1/10). doi.org/10.1101/2025...

I have strong data analysis and coding skills (MATLAB & python), project management skills, and love technical and non-technical writing (evan-lhealey.medium.com). I would love to stay in the field of psychedelics, but am happy to look at a variety of options, in both academia and industry.
