Twenty years is a long time, if you're an LP. Today on Substack I'm rewriting my Top Albums Of 2006 list.

For a junk drawer to legally qualify as a real junk drawer, what is the ONE absolute mandatory item it must include? A pharmaceutical drug rep pen, or a pen advertising a hotel/resort no longer in existence.

Alex Kent is the maddest genius currently committing sound to [format], and I refuse to entertain anyone's opinion on the topic (or debate, or even acknowledge you've spoken) because you are so impossibly WRONG I would never deign to waste my time explaining why. Anyway, there's a new Shearling EP.

I was a sophomore when Glen (and The Frames) opened for Calexico in Philly. He was — I think— the third musician I ever interviewed for the school paper. Glen was so cool. Chatting with him felt effortless. I credit him with curing me of ever feeling pre-interview jitters again. Requiescat.

New Mix Tape posted to Substack for paid subscribers only. Sorry, rest of the world, once again you're missing out on some good tunes and bad drawings of mine from pre-school.

My wife had never seen Possession so I showed it to her last weekend. She wasn’t a fan AT ALL but it inspired quite a bit of discussion. Not looking forward to Possession (2027).

If the first two singles off the upcoming Grace Cummings record are any indication, it's going to be something special.

I had to return two birthday gifts (“Appetite For Destruction” and “Use Your Illusion I/II”) when my mother noticed the Parental Advisory stickers on them. So, buying this in front of her at my local Alwilk — and her not noticing — was a major coup.

Honestly that looks like someone tried to get into it! I’m glad it arrived safely.

Bodies For Strontium 90 was one of those LPs I picked up because Hydra Head released the CD, so I knew it must be good. It's incredible!

New Substack mixtape for paid subscribers only. Ordinarily this is where I'd write something like, "consider supporting Swan Fungus today!" but I know the truth. I've been doing this long enough. It's not for everyone. Sorry.

I'm not sure how Biosphere's SHENZHOU eluded my ears for so long, as it is another perfect night-ocean-drone ambient record. Nevertheless, AQ list #137 (the one that introduced me to Radar Bros.) highlighted it, and here I am 24 years later discovering it:

It came from the Ron Kane collection, I believe he got it signed at a show at the Wiltern in the 90s. The ticket stub was inside the cover, and I *think* Ron blogged about it before his death but I can't find the post anymore. Any GWAR record is a keeper!

There are very few LPs I would NEVER sell (only one off the top of my head is my signed “Songs of Leonard Cohen”). I’ve sold hundreds from my collection in the past five years…and while a lot sting, I think this one still stings the most:

Oh, @thechriswilcox.bsky.social you fool! You should have disavowed the Nets when they left NJ like I did. Now I barely have think about basketball at all. Plus I have enough space in my heart for the Mets to drive an even larger knife through!

AQ mail order list #134 introduced me to FRESH by Salvatore. "Poppy and sunny and nice, taking their Neu! influence into the Stereolab realm...hypnotic, Circle-ular grooves transport the listener into lazy reverie, with plenty of gentle psychedelic guitar drift/drone, plus xylophone & accordion."

Thank you for this! It’s a fun exercise, right? First we judge ourselves, and then again from our best guess of what friends, family, and strangers might think. It forces us to face our worst fears of how others might perceive us, and then publicize it. Perfect for someone with a humiliation kink.

I wasn’t allowed to own any CD with a parental advisory sticker. A friend got me Use Your Illusion 1 & 2 for my 9th birthday and my mom made me return them. It was humiliating. So in 1994 when 11-year-old me escaped from Alwilk Records with it, this became the hidden symbol of my rebelliousness:
