What do you want from a sermon?
I have spoken about this a number of times before, but it rarely stops needing a new airing. Preaching can be a difficult business. It can be hard work reading, preparing, trying to understand the passage on its terms and trying to wrap our head around the commentaries we have that are at least supposed to shed some light on the passage at hand. Hard as that is, that is not where the work stops. Once we have some understanding of the passage, we have to think about how we are going to present what it says.

Should we make alcohol available at church events?
Last week, I wrote about the Jurassic Park Principle of Christian freedom. You can read that post here. After writing that, I saw a question floating around about whether it is okay, or wise, to have alcohol at church events. So, with a nod to that previous post, let me have a stab at my particular answer. Two basic principles The two relevant principles are pretty basic. On the one hand, we have Christian liberty. On the other hand, there are times whereby - out of love and for the sake of the gospel - we will not take up our liberty for the sake of others.

The latest edition of Evangelicals Now contains a story with the following headline: Christians launch legal challenge on VAT for private schools. You can read the full post here (paywall). Particularly worthy of note is the claim within the article that the moves are 'unjust and discriminatory' for Christians. I don't quite know why Christians would seek to do this. I appreciate that different people will have a range of views on the extent to which the state should be permitted to dictate to parents how to raise and educate their children.

It is sometimes said that Jesus is nowhere explicitly referred to as God. There are lots and lots of examples in the Bible of Jesus doing things only God can do, operating in ways only God operates and accepting things that only God ought to receive. I was speaking with a Muslim the other day - who affirmed Jesus as a good prophet - and said, considering Jesus went around forgiving sin and receiving worship from people without correcting them, he was either God incarnate or an extremely bad prophet who encouraged severe blasphemy!
