It’s a record month, with greater model choice, manufacturer incentives and the Government’s Electric Car Grant all helping to drive demand. But strong sales are only part of the picture. We also need to make sure the experience of driving electric works for the next wave of drivers.

🚗 ⚡ Almost five new electric cars were registered every minute in September! Preliminary figures from the SMMT show that 99,199 EVs joined the UK’s roads in September, up 36.3% on the same month last year.

For many drivers, the dealership is their first real introduction to electric vehicles. So the experience matters. Yet only 1 in 4 used EV buyers rate their dealership handover as good or excellent, compared with 34% of new car buyers, according to our latest nationwide survey.

Cross-Pavement EV Charging: Planning Barrier Removed | EVA England
The Government has removed a major planning barrier to cross-pavement EV charging, making home charging fairer for drivers without a driveway.

The Government is scrapping the need for a separate planning application for approved cross-pavement solutions, removing a major planning barrier to cross-pavement #EV charging.

Our CEO Vicky Edmonds comments: "That should give Government the confidence to stay the course. Their focus now should be on making it easier and more affordable for more and more people to make the switch, rather than changing direction or adding new costs that could slow that progress."

"If the Government gets the wider support package right, it can give consumers more confidence, stimulate demand and make the existing targets much easier for manufacturers to meet." This is a real opportunity to address the barriers to EVs. We’ll be making sure EV drivers are heard throughout.

EVA England CEO Vicky Edmonds: “EV demand has not grown as quickly as expected, but the answer is not to lower the ambition of the ZEV mandate - which has been critical for creating a market of EVs that people want to buy. It has to be to fix the things stopping drivers from making the switch.
120
EVA England @evaengland.org.uk · 14/08/2026
The UK Government just launched its #ZEV Mandate consultation, reviewing the pathway to 2030 and 2035. As the transition gathers pace, the focus should be on removing the barriers stopping drivers from making the switch, not weakening the ambition.
120
EVA England @evaengland.org.uk · 06/08/2026
Our CEO, Vicky Edmonds: "The priority must be policy certainty and ensuring that every driver, not only those able to charge at home, can benefit from the transition. That means reviewing the public charging market so that cost, reliability and ease of use encourage more people to make the switch."

EVA England @evaengland.org.uk · 03/08/2026
Our CEO, Vicky Edmonds, comments: “Far more significant reform is now needed so every driver can truly benefit from EVs. That means tackling the underlying cost of public charging, widening access to affordable home and overnight charging, and making sure any savings are passed directly to drivers.
120
EVA England @evaengland.org.uk · 03/08/2026
Crucially, the report also raises that cutting VAT is no guarantee of lower prices at the plug. As with fuel duty, there's a real risk that charge point operators absorb any saving into margins rather than passing it to drivers.
100
EVA England @evaengland.org.uk · 03/08/2026
New AutoMotive's analysis confirms that the cut to household electricity VAT will widen the gap between those who can charge at home and those who can't.   Those relying entirely on public charging will see none of that saving and pay an estimated £216 a year in VAT on top.
120
EVA England @evaengland.org.uk · 31/07/2026
Before any decision is made on diluting the ZEV Mandate, Government should look at what's driving up the cost of charging in the first place. The cost of public charging review is where that work starts. 👉 Read more here: www.chargeuk.org/post/reduced...

EVA England CEO, Vicky Edmonds, comments: “These findings show so clearly that cheaper public charging could unlock significant demand for EVs. The network has grown enormously, but price, reliability and accessibility are absolutely key to persuading more drivers to switch to electric."
120
EVA England @evaengland.org.uk · 31/07/2026
New polling by @yougov.co.uk, commissioned by ChargeUK, shows that cutting public charging prices to below petrol would move the needle on EV sales. This research found it would boost demand by nearly 50% and put sales above the government's 2026 target of 33% of new car sales.

That's why we're pushing the Government's Cost of Public Charging Review to deliver the reforms needed to bring down public charging costs, so drivers aren't left behind simply because they don't have a driveway.

EVA England @evaengland.org.uk · 29/07/2026
With VAT on household electricity bills set to be removed from October, the gap between home and public charging risks growing wider.

EVA England @evaengland.org.uk · 29/07/2026
The conversation about EV charging often focuses on the number of chargepoints. But as our CEO Vicky Edmonds explained on BBC Radio 4's You and Yours on Monday, "it's not about chargepoints being available, it's about them being at the right price and being accessible too."

"The Government's Cost of Public Charging Review must deliver structural reform to bring down prices at the chargepoint. That means tackling the significant taxes, levies and electricity costs faced by chargepoint operators and ensuring savings are passed directly on to drivers."
030
EVA England @evaengland.org.uk · 21/07/2026
This announcement highlights a challenge we have long raised: a two-tier transition in which home charging gets cheaper, but public charging still costs drivers more. CEO Vicky Edmonds: "The transition cannot be fair while people pay substantially more simply because they cannot charge at home."
130
EVA England @evaengland.org.uk · 21/07/2026
Today's announcement that VAT on household electricity bills will be cut from October is good news for households across the country. For EV drivers who charge at home, it makes one of the UK's cheapest forms of transport even more affordable.

Open letter to the Chancellor - Pause and rethink eVED | EVA England
EVA England’s open letter to the Chancellor urging the Government to pause and rethink eVED, which in its current form risks undermining driver confidence in electric vehicles.
010
EVA England @evaengland.org.uk · 15/07/2026
We've written to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, urging her to pause and rethink #eVED, the proposed pay-per-mile tax on EVs. The Government published its consultation response on Monday, confirming it intends to press ahead, but the fundamental concerns raised by drivers still aren't resolved.

EVA England @evaengland.org.uk · 13/07/2026
We'll have more to say as the detail lands. But for now, our focus turns to the public charging review, due to report this autumn, which needs to deliver lower, fairer charging costs for drivers before eVED lands in 2028. 👉 Read the Consultation Response here:

"At such a crucial point in the switch to electric, ministers should be making the system simpler, fairer and easier to understand, not pressing ahead with a policy whose key faults remain unresolved."
100
EVA England @evaengland.org.uk · 13/07/2026
Our CEO, Vicky Edmonds, says: "This policy still does not work for drivers. The Government has made one welcome change for newer EVs, but the wider scheme remains too complex, risks leaving people out of pocket and fails to give drivers the confidence they need."
100
EVA England @evaengland.org.uk · 13/07/2026
But the wider scheme is largely unchanged from the proposal: 🔹 It's still due to launch in April 2028. 🔹 Mileage driven abroad remains in scope, with no exemption. 🔹 Nothing in the response shields drivers from costs passed on by garages or third-party providers.
