Bonus cat
A detail of The proverbs by Breughel depicting the dutch proverb 'belling the cat' meaning being the first one to attempt a difficult or controversial thing. The detail shows a soldier binding a bell to a chonk of a cat. Photo taken at Snijders&Rockox House, Antwerp.

what is art if not derpy cat faces
Detail of a 17th century painting called Still life of fish by Joannes Fijt. There's a grey and white cat behind a wooden tub, surrounded by fish and crab. The cat's face is wonderfully derpy. Picture taken at Snijder & Rockox House, Antwerp.

it's been a long time since I 'did an art'. so yeah. made for my mom's birthday
A female looking figure, wearing a crown of leaves, is reaching up towards a stormy sky. Lightning seems to hit her right hand and travels down her arm, through a hole in the center of her chest, towards her other arm, where it coalesces into a ball in her hand. Her hair floats on the wind, it's hard to tell where it ends and the sky begins. Below her hair, the rain falls.

me: thinks about reading more philosophy again. finds a PDF of Hannah Arendt's The Human Condition in my digital library. starts reading. immediately gets hit in the face by this (published in 1958)
In this case, it would be as though our brain, which constitutes the physical, material condition of our thoughts, were unable to follow what we do, so that from now on we would indeed need artificial machines to do our thinking and speaking. If it should turn out to be true that knowledge (in the modern sense of know-how) and thought have parted company for good, then we would indeed become the helpless slaves, not so much of our machines as of our know-how, thoughtless creatures at the mercy of every gadget which is technically possible, no matter how murderous it is.

And this is why i believe AI won't ever work the way it is now. It's not connected to (the experience of) reality, only to representations of (the experience of) reality.
A screenshot from the essay with text highlighted: Digital computers are fundamentally disconnected from the world; they are operating entirely on the abstraction of it. They are being fed pictures of the world. It is like someone living in a box and knowing the world only through photos of it. It is two fundamentally different things. It is incredibly easy to manipulate, and incredibly reductive. And therefore, what comes out is a reduced version of the world as well.

This whole paragraph is *chef's kiss*
Screenshot of the essay that reads: It feels as if the whole world has been transformed into images of the world and has thus been drawn into the human realm, which now encompasses everything. There is no place, no thing, no person or phenomenon that I cannot obtain as image or information. One might think this adds substance to the world, since one knows more about it, not less, but the opposite is true: it empties the world; it becomes thinner. That’s because knowledge of the world and the experience of the world are two fundamentally different things. While knowledge has no particular time or place and can be transmitted, experience is tied to a specific time and place and can never be repeated. For the same reason, it also can’t be predicted. Exactly those two dimensions—the unrepeatable and the unpredictable—are what technology abolishes.

Drop an old person you're going to turn into in the future (wishful thinking)
An older woman on the metro. Her white hair is cut in very short round bob with heavy bangs. She sports oversized sunglasses and earrings, a cream colored jacket, striped shirt, dark flare pants and red, high heeled boots. She seems incredibly unbothered and cool.

Insta is the worst walled garden ever... just look at how beautiful this comic is. (It's also genuinely funny)
Comic panel from Elzear. It features a large gate submerged in a pool of water. The colors are bright and ethereal, the entryway of the gate looks like a crystal portal. Two characters are going through the gate, one says "Brace yourself, we're diving!" A comic panel from Elzear. Two characters - one a woman, the other a ghost-like wolf figure - stand in front of the entry way of what looks like a large cactus garden. The woman says "Let's set up camp around here before going into this part of the cactarium". The wolf like creature replies "You're the pro here Sandalette."

Had on of these bad boys called a concha: it's a sweet bread with crunchy sugary bits. 10/10 no notes.
Three conchas on a plate. Conchas are Mexican sweetened bread rolls with a crunchy topping. The pattern on top resembles the grooves of a seashell, hence the name.

nature: so what if butterfly but then also bird??? yes!!!
A picture of a Sunbittern, a bird whose wing feather pattern resembles the wings of a butterfly. It's sitting on the ground, its wings spread, looking at the viewer with a "look at how pretty I am" attitude.

Art I would buy if I was rich... Bernard Vié. Chat descendant l’escalier, 2009
A bronze statue of a cat walking down the stairs. The stairs are sculpted by being attached to the cats paws, without any other support which gives the impression of the stairs floating in the air. The shape of the cat is fairly realistic, the bronze is of a dark color, and has a rough, non-reflective finish.

It's funny though that while they acknowledge the change in her facial features between original and over-painted version, they don't mention the very clear 'boob job' because...sensibilities I guess. It's very obvious though. Restored version on the left:
The restored version of The Vegetable Seller, a painting by an unknown 16th century, North European artist. A large work on canvas, it depicts an impressive array of fruit, vegetables and edible flowers, displayed in abundance in various bowls and baskets, almost spilling out of the painting. Surrounded by this striking presentation sits a lone female figure looking intently out at the viewer, perhaps a kitchen maid or a market stall seller. The previously over-painted version of The Vegetable Seller. The colors are muted, darker. The female figure has different facial features; her eyes are larger and softer, her lips are upturned in a brief smile, her chin is less pronounced. There is also a very noticeable difference made to her bosom, which appears far too round, a mismatch with the rest of her shirt. Her arms look more delicate too, although this is less obvious.

This goes right to the bones of it, and yes I do think it operates like religion. While their actions now are focused on short-term profit, the people at the top are very focused on survival, legacy and - in some cases - immortality. They want to use all our money to create their personal futures
Screenshot of a part of "Never forgive them", it reads: The Rot Economy isn’t simply growth-at-all-costs thinking — it’s a kind-of secular religion, something to believe in, that everything and anything can be more, should be more, must be more, that we are defined only by our pursuit of more growth, and that something that isn’t growing isn’t alive, and is in turn inferior.

No, perhaps not a religion. Religions are, for the most part, concerned with the hereafter, and contain an ethical dimension that says your present actions will affect your future — or your eternity. The Rot Economy is, by every metric, defined by its short-termism. I’m not just talking about undermining the long-term success of a business to juice immediate revenue numbers. I’m thinking in broad ecosystem terms.

I watched Primer (2004) two nights ago and as far as time-loop stories go this one is on par with Dark in terms of sheer mindfuckery. Recommended only if you enjoy puzzle box movies because exactly nothing gets explained
The poster for the movie Primer (2004). It features the two main characters Aaron and Abe, facing each other on opposite sides of what looks like a metal cube with various wires plugged into it. At the bottom is a quote by Roger Ebert: "Ingenious and fascinating...thumbs up"

Well. from: drdevonprice.substack.com/p/you-might-...
Screenshot of a part of the article that reads: For burnt out people, the unrelenting need for rest can seem shameful. And yet it is the only way to halt the bleeding of overwork. When a long-term eating disorder patient enters into recovery, they need to ingest many thousands more calories than most people consume, for a prolonged period, in order to rebuild the body’s damaged tissues and refuel. Their hunger becomes insistent, and extreme. There is no negotiating with this need, no convincing it that it asks for “too much” — the eating disorder sufferer has already spent too much time denying themselves. With its extreme hunger, the body claims its survival.

Among the exploited and overworked, the compulsion to sleep and stare off into space can feel similarly uncontrollable. And yet, it is also a blessing, a ravenous hungering for more life.

i read the whole of Goodnight Ponpon in a day last week and that was a mistake
A cover image of the Goodnight Ponpon manga. It features two figures standing in a field against a backdrop of leaves. On the left is a cute looking young woman in a loose knee lenght dress,on the right is a young man, his head replaced with a long, dark shape with a suggestion of devil horns at the top. The couple is holding hands. The image is black and white.

Oh, not link card image eh? ok whatever, here it is
A square image, grey background with black text that says The Kid. In the center is an old timey drawing of a girl in black lines; she wears a short dress that swirls around her as she seems to be moving. Her eyes are crossed out with a purple marker. There are crude child-like drawings of the sun, grass and some flowers added in the same purple marker.Black text on a grey background that reads: Some afternoons should go on forever, and in my mind they do. But even the power of imagination can’t stop the real world from turning, so I’m forced to go back to my wanderings eventually.

When a Cat Faces West has exactly the right kind of casual mystery/supernatural vibe that I love. Makes sense since Yuki Urushibara is also the author of Mushishi. I hope they'll turn this into an anime too someday.

So it starts out like this. And then silly shit happens. The End.
Screenshot of the start of the story, it reads: Breathe in. Breathe out.

The wind still wails; its voice fills my ears, but it doesn’t bother me. It’s peaceful here on the ground. Really, if I keep my eyes closed and my mind as quiet as I can, I could just let the stillness envelop me, and I’m sure the air would become motionless around me.

Perfect. If it weren’t for those DAMN BELLS.

Fell in love with this work today. The colors are mesmerizing. Northern Lights. Study from North Norway - Anna Boberg (it's not dated but probably early 1900's)
Northern Lights. Study from North Norway - a painting by Anna Boberg. It depicts the northern lights over the sea. The majority of the painting shows the sky with only a bit of water and rock at the bottom. The colors of the sky are particularly vibrant ranging from deep blue to purple and almost white. The brush strokes are visible and give the piece an impressionistic touch.
