You could bundle up the worst aspects of the worst 10 US Presidents in history, and still come nowhere near the current incumbent.

In just back from retracing my father’s steps in Ital Ag 44 to May 45, including the site of atrocities his battalion uncovered. It’s almost more traumatising that our own side was in places as guilty and on this scale.

Having Ted Lasso in the list at all is just an embarrassment. And the US Office higher than the UK original? A bit fat no to that one.

As far as I know there was only a new smaller penny minted with an 1806 date, but not the twopenny piece, and the wider recoinage of 1816 didn’t include copper or bronze coins. It may be I’m missing something though. Where did you pick up there was a copper twopenny piece from 1816?

Keep in mind twopenny pieces of that era were called cartwheels - they were around 5mm thick.

“The trouble with you, Spode, is that just because you have succeeded in inducing a handful of half-wits to disfigure the London scene by going about in black shorts, you think you’re someone. You hear them shouting “Heil, Spode!” and you imagine it is the Voice of the People.” Bertie Wooster

The market wasn’t buying enough bonds to fund the US deficit, which has increased as a result of inflation, and the ever increasing gap between US Government spending and US Government income. US debt now exceeds 40 trillion dollars. That is not sustainable and the market has taken fright.

Time to delete my Google account and stop using their apps. Their renaming of Lake Ontario and the Gulf of Mexico is pusillanimous as regards their US users, but totally unacceptable for the remainder of the world. As for me, I’m out.

This must be one of Dolly's last recordings, and as an homage to her greatness, and her love and support for younger artists, it could not be bettered. Son of Jolene. RIP to the greatest country singer — nay, American — of her generation. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jd49...

You think it would cost £3m? Add a zero and likely then multiply. And still it would do little good, however tragic the events involved.

eurunculus.bsky.social @eurunculus.bsky.social · 16/08/2026
Millions would be spent, if not tens of millions. Years would pass. Many lawyers would buy new more expensive cars on the fees. Nothing would be done as a result. Arguing for a public enquiry when the behaviour being complained about was immoral not illegal would be an expensive and pointless act.

Multi faceted tragedy as this is, a public inquiry would cost millions (if not tens of millions), take years to report, and then find nothing of value that we don’t know already. The only beneficiaries would be our learned friends, who would be coining it in on all quarters.

cool use case of chatgpt work i heard last night:
connect your family calendars and explain your kids' interests.
every morning for the drive to school, have it make a podcast that talks about one kid's soccer game that afternoon, one kid's upcoming birthday, some news, etc.

Stamp duty and council tax are terrible taxes. Land value tax could replace both - and Andy Burnham has backed it for 16 years. Who wins? Who loses? What happens to house prices? LVT could drive growth. But it isn’t easy. Our model shows its promise - and its problems.

Perhaps because I’m a bit odd, I wear two watches - an apple and an old fashioned one. I wear them everywhere, including on every trip I make to London. Number of watches stolen in many hundreds of days in London (perhaps thousands) = nil.

I’m afraid we don’t all know that. At the minimum the two provisions conflict. A27 needs to have applied a ‘notwithstanding’ to avoid any appearance of conflict between the two, or to create a primacy.

Our minor inconvenience is one thing, the existential threat to the natural world around us is both real and frightening. If we dislike temperatures in the high 30s and 40s we will even more dislike a world where most food production is lost, natural carbon sequestration disappears and peatlands dry

Three ways to improve high streets by *raising* business rates: 1. Higher rates on long-empty shops, to force realistic rents 2. End exemption for charity shops. 3. Make landlords pay when candy/vape shops vanish with unpaid rates. They'll ensure rates are paid up-front.

He was local secretary of the Railway Guards Friendly Association, perhaps even helping to set up the local branch, so his wife got a lump sum which would have been of some help. The family stayed in there employed of the various railway companies until the 1930s.

@rwldproject.bsky.social my GG GF. He had had a previous accident, likely also on the railways, and was missing a foot. That, and a dram taken at new year when traffic had to stop as a result of a fatal crash at Forgandenny earlier in the evening, maybe explained his slip.
