My worry was the Community tier would simply be committees of regional authorities, rather than bodies in their own right. This proposal feels more positive than I feared, though how much power the Communities will have still a bit vague. If they have real decision making powers I’ll be interested.

It is a tighter election than was predicted even just a week ago. The gap got considerably smaller over the final week. The irony of those seeking a Sweden of "the good old days", is that Sweden was dominated by the Social Democrats.

The current govt has been the most right wing in Sweden’s history. If those parties win majority again it could be a disturbing moment. A progressive win would mean Social Democrats in govt in 4 of 5 Nordic countries.

Swedish election day. If polls right then progressive parties should eek out a win, but a very last minute shift towards the right has narrowed the gap. Interesting day to come.

Unless a dramatic swing happens, next Sunday’s election in Sweden looks almost certain to put Magdalena Andersson as PM. Which would mean Social Democrat led govts in 4 of 5 Nordics. A contrast to the prevailing political winds in Germany, France etc.

What's particularly interesting is the swing among 18-29 voters in Iceland: went from 60%+ Yes in June poll to 60%+ No in the final polls. Other age groups mostly didn't change.

And it's official - Iceland 🇮🇸 has voted No to restarting EU negotiations: 52.5% / 47.5%. Status quo wins. Iceland of course remains in the EEA and EFTA.

Fishing accounts for ~40% of Icelandic export value, and ~8% of GDP. Anyone who knows Icelandic history can tell you about the Cod Wars. It’s a pillar of society & identity. While not the only reason for what looks like a No vote, it’s hardly “unbelievable”. Icelandic politics is not UK politics.

Euan Purchase @euanspc.bsky.social · 30/08/2026
Brace yourself for a lot of UK commentators, of both sides, trying to project UK politics for the result in Iceland. Most of whom probably had no idea the referendum was even happening until now.

Iceland 🇮🇸 votes today in a pivotal referendum on whether to restart negotiations with the EU for membership. It's the first time Icelanders have voted on EU negotiations. Polls show a near 50-50 split, so impossible to predict. If Yes today, a 2nd referendum would follow the negotiations.
