Nation still living in fear of Viking raids in 2026

It is absolutely crackers to me how little appetite there is to celebrate fish and marine animals in this country. Baffling national psyche for an archipelagic nation, deeply ashamed of the sea for some reason.

Like several (all) of these interested studios are capable of making shows with a limited-but-not-insignificant budget, in Britain, which are culturally significant in crowded genres and media landscapes. This is a healthy sign for insiders view of the show's future!

I think it is unlikely that it will ever be big to the level of displacing tennant as a cultural icon, but there is no reason it cannot still be big, popular (enough) and crucially commercially successful again - think the houses bidding in the above article are a real sign of life to this effect!

Yeah I figure that is the driver of the size, but the aesthetic choices on top of that are very... blocky, angular? It's reminiscent of Tonka trucks

This. Media writ large has decided (patronisingly imo) that people want universalising, steamrolling simplicity without complexity from public thought. Short form socials and publishers seeking mass market heavily incentivise the death of nuance. It's one-neat-trick self-help intellectualism.

One thing I find endlessly funny about the rise of AI is that it has revealed that there is a large number of people who believe that the reason they wrote essays at school or university is their teachers were desperately waiting for them to provide a definite answer to “Lear: what’s up with him?”

Just a whole area of activism dominated by people for whom practical steps we could take tomorrow (nationalise Elbit's UK operations, expel the Israeli ambassador, seize the assets of entities building on stolen land) are completely secondary to a desire to impose purity tests.

Indeed - following the proscription of PA, political energy was focused on direct action against that, encouraging people to get arrested on terrorism charges (!), rather than getting people to use that appetite for direct action on opposing the genocide itself and Britain's involvement therein!

I don't think STV is that complicated. AMS is also complicated but voters manage to express divergent preferences through it! You can also minimise the complexity of STV by having an above the line/below the line split in Australia where you can elect to just follow the party's order of pref

This change is also going to apply to a vanishingly small group. How many u24s at a time are there who've been in work for 6+ months BUT are now out of work for 6+ months AND are claiming? Surely a tiny % of claimants as a whole, so a tiny saving by the 30% cut? It's so nakedly performative.
