The first time we took our children on a bus, they went straight to the back. "The back goes faster!" they said. That knowledge came from their experience of roller coasters. 🤔

Clearing out old stuff from the filing cabinet, I was struck by how high our electricity bills used to be. The total on this 2003 one is comparable to recent ones where the unit rate was nearly 3× as high. We used to use a lot more electricity. Now we have more efficient appliances and lighting.
Part of a 2003 electricity bill showing a total of €172.86 for two months. The unit rate was only 10.75c (+VAT) but we consumed a total of 1342 units.

Sadly, it's reminiscent of hand painted signs. Sign painters haven't entirely died out, but they depend on the few customers who want to distinguish themselves by investing in something unique. 99percentinvisible.org/episode/epis...

There was a time when every street sign, every billboard, and every window display was painted by hand. This sounds unremarkable until you actually think about what that actually means. Every single s...

The "Eircom" scammer who called to say they had detected a problem with our router got me to do a speed test. He then tried to convince me that the clear sign of a problem was that our upload speed (101Mbps) was much lower than our download speed (871Mbps)!

I can't help but think of the cases in the USA where police officers believe they have overdosed on fentanyl after handling it. But although they believe it and go to hospital, it doesn't happen.

In Ireland we use proportional representation thanks to the British government, which introduced it in 1919 after Sinn Féin won a disproportionate number of seats under the first past the post system in the 1918 general election. electoral-reform.org.uk/how-did-irel...

How did the Republic of Ireland get proportional representation?
Today, almost every election held on the island of Ireland uses the Single Transferable Vote (STV). Bar elections for the 18 Westminster seats from Northern Ireland – every other elec

Click and Clack (Car Talk) proposed a scheme where clocks change twice a day! They would have put the clocks back an hour in the morning so you had an extra hour to get to work, then forward an hour in the afternoon so you could go home early. I think they called it Double Dog Daylight Saving Time.

Walking around Belfast a couple of years ago I was pleased to see immigrant communities as part of normal life. I saw it as a sign that "The Troubles" were firmly in the past.

English commentators need to stop analysing Northern Ireland through an English lens! When you see anti-immigrant riots in Belfast, Ballymena or Larne and immediately reach for "Britain's far-right problem", you're missing half the story. This isn't just racism. It's loyalist terrorism. 1/

Long before I took up running as an exercise activity, I mocked work colleagues for their wasted effort in going out running when there was no medal on offer. To prove that it was possible to run just medal races, I ran the Droitwich Half Marathon twice with no preparation.
Two running medals for completing the Droitwich Half Marathon in separate years in the late 1980s. The medals are suspended in front of a colourful t-shirt bearing the caption "Runners aren't normal".
