Also this...
how much will it cost to charter a valley line train???

Few details have been released, so we still want to confirm that transit riders in Edmonton are getting the best deal possible out of this change of ownership, and that ETS has a clear plan to improve the public facing Valley Line service
what we are still looking for

This is exciting news, but there is a lot we are still looking for when it comes to this deal and the future operations of the Valley Line

While exact numbers cannot be publicly released, we would like confirmation that this is the best deal for getting the most possible transit service for our city

We want to see what ETS plans on doing differently than TransEd, and what public facing operational changes will be made

And most importantly...

Edmonton Transit Riders @etriders.bsky.social · 09/06/2026
Cohesive and public ownership of transit will hopefully result in increased efficiency, more responsive communications, reduced duplication, increased internal knowledge, and improved accountability
what this means

While we don’t have all the details at this point, bringing the Valley Line into ETS could mean...

Optimized transit, pedestrian, and vehicle movement as barriers are reduced between the LRT operators and other parts of the City’s transportation system,

More responsive communications and more efficient replacement bus deployment when something goes wrong,

Reducing duplication of resources and staff between the City of Edmonton and TransEd,

Making use of the existing LRT knowledge City staff already have, and

Improving public accountability for a vital piece of public infrastructure within our city.
100
Edmonton Transit Riders @etriders.bsky.social · 09/06/2026
What was originally a 30-year operations contract will be terminated after only a few years. ETS will be the sole operator of the entire Valley Line when it opens, bringing it in line with the Capital and Metro Lines
what is happening?

TransEd is the private company selected to build and operate the Valley Line Southeast. The Valley Line is the only LRT line in Edmonton that uses this ‘public private partnership’ (P3) model.

TransEd was originally supposed to operate the Valley Line Southeast for 30 years, however Council has decided to phase out the City’s operating contract with TransEd within the next few years.

Edmonton Transit Service will be the sole operator of both the Valley Line Southeast and West legs.

Publicly owned and operated public transit increases efficiency, improves accountability, and builds internal capacity for future transit projects!

Edmonton Transit Riders @etriders.bsky.social · 09/06/2026
As of 9:00am today, the City of Edmonton has confirmed that they will be taking over operations from TransEd, the private operator of the Valley Line Southeast We are very excited to see our transit system be brought entirely in-house, and hope to see better coordination and optimization
ets is taking over the valley line
our p3 experiment is coming to an end... 25 years early

The Bonnie Doon Community League is whining about proposed bus rapid transit on Whyte / near the University. They've now turned off comments after I praised BRT, so possibly not so eager to hear people speak up after all. Survey link: bit.ly/4nXdDiV. Go be enthusiastic about curb-running BRT lanes!
A Facebook post from the Bonnie Doon community League with a map showing proposed BRT route. Text reads "Edmonton's BRT route B2 (West Edmonton Mall - Bonnie Doon via U of A) is coming, and it means big changes to 82 Avenue: reduced traffic lanes, removal of on-street parking from 109 to 91 St, and new transit lanes. Two design options are on the table and your input matters. If you have concerns about deliveries, parking, signage, construction timing, or accessibility now's the time to speak up.

At the Urban Planning Committee on May 12, we must emphasize the need to replace DATS vehicles, community buses, and conventional buses, and to fund their refurbishment. This action would ensure that ETS remains an efficient and accessible transit system.

This estimate is likely to come back for a Council decision during budget discussions, and we would love to see this station's dark and gloomy days put behind it!
what is happening at the coliseum?

Last year, the Government of Alberta granted $55 million to demolish the Coliseum and fund site enhancements north of 118th Avenue.

This freed up $35 million in funding that the City originally put towards demolishing the site. This funding will now be spent on infrastructure projects within the neighbourhood.why do we need a new coliseum lrt station?

Upgrading the Coliseum LRT Station through the Exhibition Lands funding has been a priority for Edmonton Transit Riders.

The current LRT Station is filled with dark stairways, tight corners and long hallways. This reduces sightlines and safety, and is a nightmare to traverse for people with strollers and accessibility needs.

The thousands of current and future transit riders who use Coliseum LRT Station everyday deserve comfort and safety during their transit experience.

We will be getting cost estimates for a renewed Coliseum Station that ☀️ Brings all entrances above ground ♿ Reduces the amount of stairs and elevators in the design ☂️ Provides a covered entrance into the Expo Centre 💰 Uses already available funding for the Exhibition Lands neighbourhood
one step closer to a better coliseum stationwhat we asked for

We reached out to City Council earlier this week, asking them to support:

Planning an above ground redesign of the Coliseum LRT Station

Funding the reconstruction of the LRT station and necessary upgrades to the Coliseum Transit Centre and Expo Centre in order to provide improved access

what we got

Urban Planning Committee unanimously passed a motion to get high-level cost estimates for a renewed Coliseum LRT Station that includes:

Removing the underground sections and bringing all entrances above ground

Improving connectivity to the future neighbourhood

Providing a covered connection to the Expo Centre

Funding it through the already available $35 million for the Exhibition Lands
