I keep thinking about that. How as a Black parent you have choices, and all of them are bad. Send your kid to a predominantly-white school where they will have access to better academics and resources, but also face more racism and social isolation? That's bad choice A

I understand the author's intent and the daughter's agency. However, the framing in some parts concerns me. As someone who straddled the two worlds she discusses, it's complicated. There are trade-offs and variables, and you don't really know how things will pan out until they do.

There seems to be no clear solution as a Black parent. If you enroll your children in schools in more affluent areas, you run the risk of racial trauma. Low income schools have inequity issues and gaps that have long term consequences, especially in post secondary academia.

My parents had seen the neighborhood schools weren't the same 10 years later (yt flight) & being more middle class acclimated, I got teased my 1 year at our neighborhood school, but didn't in high school where there were more..."kids like me". It's a nuanced convo with no easy answers
