What do we gain by using the word 'structural' and are we justified in thinking of structural injustice as something distinctive? Dr Kim's response to the dilemma puts the concept of structural injustice in a new light and also has implications for how people should try to address it.

Is structural injustice the result of wrongdoing by individuals or the state? If not, then in what sense is it really an injustice, as opposed to a tragedy? If so, then isn't it just normal injustice?

But it turns out to present a philosophical puzzle when we try to explain exactly what it is. Sonny Kim, formerly a Postdoctoral Prize Research Fellow at Nuffield College, University of Oxford and now an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Bates College, poses this puzzle as a dilemma...

The idea of structural injustice is that some injustices arise from the way societies are structured. It's a popular idea among a lot of left-wing or progressive thinkers and activists, and promises to explain a lot of what's wrong with society and its effect on individuals.

Matilde thinks voice donors, i.e. people whose voices are used to train voice synthesis software, can sometimes be harmed through this process in ways we should be concerned about.

Ethics Untangled podcast @ethicsuntangled.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
Voice synthesis can produce new, entirely synthetic voices, but it can also reproduce the voices of real people, to the point where it's difficult if not impossible to tell the synthetic voice apart from the real one.

Should we be worried about voice synthesis? One of the many technological advances that have been made in recent years is the ability of computers to synthesise people's voices to a very high standard.

In this conversation I talk to Giuli Cavaliere, Lecturer in Engaged Philosophy at University College London, who has written about this question, and also about the related question of whether states should fund assisted procreation, again when adoption exists as an alternative.
