Automating Away Ambiguity
Freedom and Technology in Beauvoir

The rise of artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies are making it possible for us to realize our fantasies but in exchange for having to accept that such technologies will interfere in our lives in various and often unforeseen ways. Because we do not seem as bothered by technological interference as we are by human interference, academics have argued that we should take advantage of technological interference in order to achieve social and political goals. Such technological paternalism has been justified by arguing that combating climate change is more important than protecting individual human freedom. By turning to the work of Simone de Beauvoir we can see why this argument is both dangerous and doomed to failure. Beauvoir’s views on freedom and on technology can help us to recognize that technological paternalism cannot resolve crises but only perpetuate them.

Automating Away Ambiguity: Freedom and Technology in Beauvoir

Nolen Gertz

Abstract: The rise of artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies are
making it possible for us to realize our fantasies but in exchange for having to ac-
cept that such technologies will interfere in our lives in various and often unforeseen
ways. Because we do not seem as bothered by technological interference as we are
by human interference, academics have argued that we should take advantage of
technological interference in order to achieve social and political goals. Such tech-
nological paternalism has been justified by arguing that combating climate change is
more important than protecting individual human freedom. By turning to the work of
Simone de Beauvoir we can see why this argument is both dangerous and doomed to
failure. Beauvoir’s views on freedom and on technology can help us to recognize that
technological paternalism cannot resolve crises but only perpetuate them.

Key words: behavior change, design ethics, Simone de Beauvoir, freedom, existentialism

Joseph Weizenbaum: "I was startled to see how quickly and how deeply people conversing with DOCTOR became emotionally involved with the computer and how unequivocally they anthropo-morphized it...people were conversing with the computer as if it were a person who could be appropriately and usefully addressed in intimate terms... What I had not realized is that extremely short exposures to a relatively simple computer program could induce powerful delusional thinking in quite normal people."

Today's lecture...
“...the week-long lecture series of 1953 on ‘The arts in the technical age’ (Die Künste im technischen Zeitalter). Of the individual addresses delivered in its framework, only two have stayed in cultural memory, as was more or less the organizers' intent. One of those two lecturers was Heisenberg, who spoke on ‘The picture of nature of modern physics’ (Das Naturbild der modernen Physik). The other was Martin Heidegger, delivering his discourse, ‘The question concerning technology’ (Die Frage nach der Technik).”
“The moving force in putting together the 1953 symposium was in fact Heidegger. [...] One of his middlemen in fact communicated the point to the physicist with some urgency, ‘Heidegger can only conceive of his lecture as a continuation of yours in the frame of the meeting.’ In fact, Heidegger had suggested Heisenberg’s lecture theme, even a version of his title.”
- Cathryn Carson, Heisenberg in the Atomic Age
