There are times at night I swear I’ve been asleep when Apple Watch says I’ve been awake.

I think this is it. A lot of people, especially older people, still watch local news.

I was thinking longer term, like compared to when I was a kid back in the previous century. I mean, I couldn't make it through one episode of Game of Thrones. Yet people seem to revel in violent media. Maybe they always did and it's just more available.

While that’s true, if you look at the increasing violence in movies, tv, video games, it’s clear some people have an appetite for it.

I wish more streamers would release shows on DVD but I don't see that happening. Luckily, HBO still releases a lot of DVDs but I have to admit I would like to watch the new season of The Gilded Age right away!

Before I head out for Glasgow for the weekend, I'm now less than 20 days away from applying for settlement, so absolutely any amount you can help with--or even just a share--I'd appreciate so so much. Thanks in advance, you guys are the best. x gofund.me/7b3589a4e

I just put library holds on Hadestown the Musical and Heated Rivalry Season One. I also noticed a few more streaming shows being released on DVD, including the first season of Slow Horses, on Dec. 15. I check www.dvdsreleasedates.com every week.

Small World (1951), Carol Deschere's fictional account of life as a "typical" 1950s housewife in Syracuse, NY sold modestly and was quickly forgotten. But it had a profound impact on her son, John Berendt, who would go on to write Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. neglectedbooks.com/?...

I keep coming back to this article in The New Republic from last fall. You can't shame people who don't recognize the legitimacy of shared norms: newrepublic.com/article/2015...

Why Shame No Longer Works in American Politics
While it once played a role in binding society, shame has lost its power—and so have the liberal tools that depend on it.

I'm reading Intrigue, the new book by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, about a conman who preys on rich older women and meets his match. This is the fifth novel of hers that I've read and I've really enjoyed all of them. She's from Mexico and that's where her books are mostly set, but she lives in Canada now.

Most regional newspapers like the Miami Herald aren’t really breaking national stories these days. They don’t have the staff. And if they do, there’ll be an AP rewrite or TV news will pick up on it.

estherp.bsky.social @estherp.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
I think the best answer is subscribe to what you can afford and use the resources of your public library and I think you’ll be reasonably well informed. You can also read AP stories and TV news sites for free.

What news stories do you want to read that you feel it’s impossible to get from any existing media?

estherp.bsky.social @estherp.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
If you don’t want to read the NYT under any circumstances, then the paywall is immaterial. You wouldn’t read it even if it was free, correct?

estherp.bsky.social @estherp.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
And if there’s a Times story you really want to read, your local library probably gets it. My library even has magazines like the New Yorker I can read online for free.

The NYT and WSJ will be fine without your money but perhaps there’s a local news startup that could use it? Or even a national outlet like ProPublica?

Many were family owned for generations. I guess you could call that a corporation just like you could call any business a corporation. But at least they had a link to their community, unlike the corporations that own media today.

Those are good! But I was thinking more basic: What are the 3 branches of government? How many senators and representatives are there? Just something to show you have a minimal amount of knowledge about our government.

This is my idea. It would be tough because elections are run by the states. A standard set of questions to answer before you get a ballot. Questions and answers are publicized, so minimal effort. Answers are programmed in, so no human decision whether you got it right.

There's a reason that Black and Jewish voters were the strongest supporters of Harris/Walz. Both know that when the people in power target your group, they don't just come for "the bad ones."

That’s a good point. I don’t see the book review in print anymore so I didn’t realize there weren’t any new reviews in that issue.

I also like the NYT "starter packs" on different genres. When John le Carre died, the Times wrote about where to start with his books and I read several of them. I don't think the books section has to be totally fixated on what came out this week.

I guess I have an unpopular opinion on this but as an avid reader who loves thrillers, I enjoyed that list. I read plenty of new books but I also like finding older titles that I may have missed.

Personally I like some of these lists, like the best thrillers. Always interesting to see titles I might not have read. And the Times still does plenty of reviews and other books coverage.

I mean, newspapers other than the NYT have a comics section. Not prestigious but I loved reading the comics page when I was a kid. I never read the sports section. Does that mean it shouldn't exist?

estherp.bsky.social @estherp.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
I could be wrong but I don't think the NYT gets money per click. Their revenue comes from monthly subscriptions, no matter how many or how few stories you read. My point is that newspapers have a range of stories, some of which are of no interest to me at all, but they may interest other people.
200
estherp.bsky.social @estherp.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
There are plenty of things newspapers cover that I think are a waste of time. Sports would be at the top of the list. But I don't judge people who are interested in reading about sports. And the Times still does more serious arts criticism than any other paper in the country.

Most Americans no longer know anyone who serves in the military and I think that affects how we think about these conflicts. I mean, we were in Iraq and Afghanistan for what, 20 years? It had no impact on the lives of most people. Makes it hard to whip up a large-scale, sustained antiwar movement.
