This is a good week! On Monday, my PhD co-supervisor @deisseroth.bsky.social was awarded the @nobelprize.org for his work on optogenetics. Yesterday, I submitted my primary postdoc work on photopharmacology, a complementary method that uses light for the precise spatial and temporal release of drugs

Writing software is a big part of experimental physics. Even a moderately complex experiment involves several instruments that need to talk and stay synchronised. To solve that problem I released mesoscopy, a modular experiment runner written with python and Qt. julienbarrier.eu/blog/2026/10...

Grant peer review costs a lot: ~$40k per application in reviewer time, with proposals reviewed again and again. In @thetransmitter.bsky.social , I propose a partial lottery: reviewers decide pass/fail, chance picks among the passes, and "unmissable" ideas and ECRs get protected routes.
thetransmitter.org
How about adding an element of chance to grant review?
A process that uses a lottery system saves time and accepts that, above a quality threshold, luck has always played a part in science funding.
