The Overton Window can go both ways. Support for Israel has slumped. The sight of grannies being arrested has probably contributed. (Whether or not that helps people in Gaza is debatable).

You reject it because you don't like the implications... Not because it's false?

What about user satisfaction, reliability, resource usage, performance, speed of adding features? This is what people paying Claude bills are looking at.

Basically, Trump has ordered Hegseth to order the generals to win the Iran war before the midterm elections. I think that's it.

"then we can work from there towards both corporate and personal legal responsibilities." Who is we?

erols @erols.eurosky.social · 26/09/2026
sure, but no one in the US govt is working towards anything. Saying "we" is not helpful. Who is we? Are you in a position to enforce corporate on OpenAI? I love these modern LLMs. I'm on Claude everyday. That shouldn't affect my critical faculties.

That 55% will fragment. Only when UK citizens see and feel that they are poorer than EU citizens - as happened in the 70s - will they be able to accept the terms of joining.

A lot of the 55% UK citizens that say they want to rejoin the EU think that either: The UK will just tell the EU that we are joining the EU and we will go back in on the same terms; or will negotiate with the EU and they will change the SM for us. When they see what the process will actually be...

Well, had I hacked Hugging Face from my bedroom, I would be facing extradition to the US and 20 years in jail. Why isn't anyone at OpenAI liable?

The UK can't build a new railway line and can't build a runway. Taking years to build another nuclear power station. It can't get skilled immigrants it needs despite the economic growth that would add. That's just about it for growth then.

Nation without an ID card or ID system wants a private company to check ID "highly effectively".

The press and voters. As negotiations progress, there will be a continuous backdrop of outrage, misinformation and disappointment. As the reality that the UK won't get all the opt outs it had before dawns, govt popularity will plummet and doing other govt business will get harder.

Doing something about it means opening negotiations to join the CU, SM or fully join the EU. That's politically impossible in the UK. The current arrangements are the best you can expect once you are out. Like Starmer, he has to pretend that there is some cake to be had to keep "remainers" onboard.

If there were a functional legal aid system, people on average salaries wouldn't have to resort to AI. If there were enough counsellors and psychiatrists people wouldn't use AI to work through their issues.

The choice wasn't lockdown or no lockdown. The choice was earlier intervention (canceling large events, masks on public transport, WFH where possible) or an unavoidable lockdown later. The lockdown was necessary to stop the NHS collapsing, not to save the lives of the elderly.

In the Netherlands, early on, we got a letter telling us no need to do anything so not to worry. Once the WA took shape I got a letter to come to the immigration office to take my picture. A permanent residence card arrived in the post shortly after.

Apologies. I meant this 150 billion fund.
The Security Action for Europe (SAFE) is a €150 billion EU-backed financial instrument adopted to boost European defence readiness and accelerate joint procurement. It provides EU member states with long-term, competitively priced loans financed by EU borrowing to procure military assets like ammunition, air defense, and drones.Key Details of the SAFE InstrumentFunding & Structure: Up to €150 billion in competitively priced, long-maturity loans (up to 45 years with a 10-year principal grace period).Primary Objective: Urgent scale-up of defense investments, development of sustainable industrial capacity within the EU, and closing critical military capability gaps.

Pretty much! Cooperation of European militaries and defence spending are separate issues. The former not contentious. The latter to be negotiated if the UK wants to be in the mix of arms suppliers.
120 2
erols @erols.eurosky.social · 12/07/2026
Military cooperation is fine. The EU has printed a big bunch of cash to spend on EU defense and boost the EU economy. European countries are on the hook for it. The UK wants to dip its paws in the fund, transferring GDP from the EU to the UK. When asked to contribute, the UK gets in a huff.
The European Defence Fund (EDF) is financed primarily through the EU's Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF)—the long-term, seven-year EU budget. For the 2021–2027 period, the fund has a total budget of nearly €8 billion, allocated directly from the centralized EU budget. These funds are supplemented by national co-financing from EU Member States, who provide the bulk of the money for actual capability development and procurement.

Agree with your sentiment but "AI" won't go bankrupt. Maybe OpenAI and Anthropic will collapse but, e.g. Google will still be standing. The Chinese labs will still be there.

If the Labour party is a de facto coalition and it skews right on net zero, immigration and benefits, I will switch to the Green Party to pressure it back my way. Labour and the Tories are coalitions where only one side or the other holds sway. Give me honest continental coalitions any day.

Writing, printing, computing and the internet: these all increased the capacity of an individual. LLMs are the latest innovations that do this. Plato on writing... He would have hated LLMs

How long before we serve AI from regular server hardware? A mobo with 1TB of DDR7 ram? GPUs only required for training?

erols @erols.eurosky.social · 18/06/2026
Indeed. But what could the UK offer the EU in exchange for breaking their own rules? This is the question that exceptionalists avoid when they simplistically assert that it can be negotiated (if you're hard enough).

Burnham would be confronted today with the same constraints and trade offs that Starmer/Reeves face. Sure, he is much better at politics than Starmer and would be an upgrade. 3 years of fiddling at the margins would damage him though.

erols @erols.eurosky.social · 17/06/2026
From the aspect of benefitting the Labour Party, it must be better for Starmer to continue absorbing the blame for unavoidable problems. Burnham steps in closer to the next G.E.

"There will also be restrictions for older teenagers up to the age of 18 that prevent “scrolling” late at night – after 8.30pm." Old enough to get married, join the army and soon, vote. But not old enough to go on YouTube after 8.30 pm.

Absent a sane US govt, the people controlling this are the leaders at Anthropic, OpenAI, Google and the Chinese govt. I want this technology regulated and these are the people who have to be engaged with to achieve that.

erols @erols.eurosky.social · 29/05/2026
Anthropic share the same concerns and are prepared to engage. Why wouldn't they be included. Would you cast Anthropic as the enemy to be defeated? That we discuss what they should be allowed to do, while they are actually doing it?

I don't think the UK joining to solve it's own economic woes is worth the future agonies. The UK joining because it's onboard the EU project. Because it believes we are all stronger together - that's a real prize.

I'd be happy with a Norway situation. Unhappily, I don't think it's tenable given where the UK public are today.

erols @erols.eurosky.social · 24/05/2026
We're not even close to wanting to join the EU, but we're already discussing which of its requirements the EU will dispense with in order to "get the UK to join". Why would the EU even spend effort beginning the accession process while we're like this?
140 4
erols @erols.eurosky.social · 24/05/2026
Norway is in the Single Market. It has to adopt EU regulations without a say in them. Pertinently, they have to have Freedom on Movement. The UK govt is pretending to us that there is a sliding scale of access vs alignment. There isn't one. To get significant economic benefit means joining the EU.
