Any authors who want to write about magic should take a ceramics class. The way potters talk about clay and glazes is basically a bunch of wizards talking about potions

Just heard Drew Struzan passed away 😞 His incredible work has given me and countless others so much awe, joy and inspiration! I had posters of his work as a teen, I began using color pencils because I thought he used them too. Always inspired by him. Just utterly heart broken. RIP Drew Struzan.

I just got a project killed. You think it won’t happen to “established” artists? Wrong. It does. Am I bummed? Sure. But I know it’s not personal, they needed something different. I vent here a bit to feel better. You may have a similar experiences too. it’s ok, we keep creating. Moving forward.💖

I wish artists got to do more brand partnerships that had nothing to do with art. Like, can Claritin and LaCroix sponsor me?

Just saw the saddest ad for Meta AI where a woman asks AI how to decorate her house for her Moby Dick book club meet up, asks AI for puns to name the snacks, asks AI to summarize Moby Dick so she doesn’t have to read it, and then asks AI for discussion prompts to talk about the book. Extremely grim.

imagine not understanding that Ghibli's cozy food and windswept vistas are intended to contrast the struggle against the horrors, and the difficult but necessary work and pain of fighting for a slice of peace the point is that the comforts are worth fighting for, but make no mistake: it's a fight

Here is a handout I made for my kid’s class last week, when I went in to talk to them about making books. I Frankensteined together a bunch of art I already had to make it, and filled other stuff in. But it was a big hit, so I’m sharing it here in case you know any kids interested in making books!

Let’s make books handout for kids, detailing various roles in making books; author, illustrator, editor, designer, marketing/publicity, librarians/booksellers/teachers and finally readers.

Two worksheets, “be a writer” with a writing mad lib, and “be an illustrator” with some drawing prompts.

Two more worksheets, “be an editor” with editorial marks to practice on some editable sentences, and “be a cover designer” with four books needing covers.

Two final handouts: “be a librarian, bookseller or teacher” with six kids and six books to match, and “be a reader” with preferences in genre and types of books to narrow your reading preferences to help find more books to enjoy.

When I see these art mills popping up, it grosses me tf out. Not just the garbage art, the insulting prices, and the complete disregard for young readers, but knowing these places are preying on authors too, who think this is how books are made. It isn't.

a screenshot from a site that undercharges for children's book illustrations, offering prices as low as $60 for an illustration, whereas a real illustrator shouldn't even get out of bed for so little. Guessing they're partially AI generated too? Idk. it's gross

Horrified by this e-mail I got from a real illustration agency this morning, advertising the chance to *USE AI* to generate images in the style of one of their illustrators. You join their plan for $$$, pick an artist, give the AI a prompt, then reach out if you want specialization.

An illustrated portrait in a painterly/cartoon style of a black woman with a puff at the back of her hair, a blue scarf headband, big double-hoop earring, and a yellow blouse with white flowers and a Peter Pan collar, against a green background filled with clouds and leaves. Text at the bottom says << Image generated with Exactly.ai in a style of Masha Shu >>.

The big takeaway here is that Reuters won this case against the AI company on grounds they violated fair use—the judge found the AI company was guilty because, in using copyrighted works to generate its output, it “meant to compete... by developing a market substitute.” Huge.
