Should companies pay dividends if worker pay isn't even keeping pace with inflation? If your answer is also HELL NO, then you'd be interested in this concept. The Wage Lock: companies should not distribute profits to shareholders unless employee pay has increased at least in line with inflation.

Not true. Given growth hasn't been improving people's lives in the UK, and the utter lack of evidence that growth can be sufficiently decoupled from it's ecological impacts, another way forward is to promote a post-growth economy that prioritises wellbeing for all within planetary boundaries.

Promoting green growth does not make you an ‘eco-nutter’. It’s the only way forward
Heading off the environmental crisis and growing the economy are not at odds. They are two sides of a coin – as our politicians should realise

4 mega-trends as 2025 kicks-off: 1🏭Industry policy is in vogue 2🚢Trade barriers are back - an escalation of tariffs is likely 3📈Security of supply is a growing concern (eg cocoa & coffee prices soared in 2024) 4🏛️Corporates are focused on compliance & reporting, less on sustainability innovation

You need to see shocking extent of carbon inequality around the world. A remarkable study led by Jared Starr finds that super-rich US households emit *2000 TIMES* more CO2e than average low-income country households. How the f*ck is that even possible? The disparity never ceases to enrage me.
An infographic entitled 'Household CO2e emissions in 2019 per income group (within United States and across countries)'. The graphic uses different-sized bubbles to show household carbon dioxide-equivalent emissions between across countries groups (low-income, lower-middle, upper-middle, and high-income), and also within the United States (bottom 10%, 90-99%, 99.9%, and super-rich & billionaires). Emissions values shown range from a tiny bubble representing 1.6 tonnes of CO2e per household in low-income countries to a huge bubble extending beyond the chart area representing nearly 3,500 tonnes per household among US-based super-rich & billionaires. Image by @AndrewLFanning using data from Starr et al. (2023).

If you see the atmosphere as a commons - a natural wealth for everyone to access equitably and sustainably - then it's not hard to see how deeply unjust the #COP29 $300bn per year goal from industrialised countries is, when historical responsibilities for excess emissions are taken into account. 1/
Infographic titled 'Compensation for atmospheric appropriation' with text that says 'Countries in the global North hold overwhelming responsibility for climate breakdown, and could be liable to pay $170 trillion in compensation by 2050 to ensure climate targets are met.' Stacked bar charts show climate finance from overemitting countries, such as the USA, EU, and the rest of the global North, flowing to low-emitting countries within their fair shares of global carbon budgets, as compensation for mitigating far more rapidly than would otherwise be required, such as India, China, sub-Saharan Africa, and the rest of the global South.
