I can tell you that it turns out telling yourself “well you obviously don’t deserve to win/have good things because you are intrinsically unworthy” turns out not to be a healthy coping mechanism.

It still hangs over my head that I graduated 11th in my class, didn’t quite make National Honor Society, was one of only 3 alternates in the whole country who didn’t get to go to Japan and teach in the JET program…

I’ve got a beginning of an idea brewing in my brain about how the premise of AI requires us to believe our authentic human selves just aren’t good enough. We can’t trust ourselves to say/write/think the right thing, so we should outsource everything to a machine that does it for us…

Urgh, I am frustrated. Wanted to design a logo, drew a picture and was super careful to make sure all the lines were nice and clean, and when I look at it now it kinda looks like AI to me. Even though I made it myself and know it isn’t. I hate that anything artistic is suspect now.

I designed the moon goddess from my WIP, and I think she came out well. I had been calling her Lilenu but that might be a bit too similar to the name of a peninsula in the UP of Michigan…

I’m surprised by how much the book has become about motherhood, through the experience of a character who lost her first child and has been thrust into a motherly role for an orphaned princess.

I think I was just a bit too old for Animorphs when it came out, which meant there was no way I was going to “read down” to a book meant for younger kids. I have heard a lot of good things about the series though!

Occasionally! I do most of my writing at my day job at my work computer, though. I have a lot of down time, which is good for writing, but I do have to stop to take care of work tasks when they come up so it’s hard for me to commit to a 20-minute window just to write.

I think for me it’s about being able to explore themes without real-world constraints. I can take inspiration from reality, then shuffle history and create magic to tell the stories I want to tell.

I’m still early in the drafting process, but I suppose it’s the scene where the MC discovers the princess she’s been trying to protect has a secret boyfriend, and the princess calls the MC out for being a coward and arranging a marriage for her that she doesn’t want. It’s a kick in the gut.
