I am looking forward to Peter Koch Gehlshøj’s PhD defence on November 6, 2026, 13:00-16:00. His thesis is entitled “Murmuring Echoes: Reenacing Conflicts and Identities in Eighteenth-Century Music Theater,” and I’m the chairperson for the assessment committee. The defence is public.

This is quite cool. My university is the first organisation in the world to force Microsoft to allow us to turn off copilot summaries in Word 365, after a backlash against it from staff (including, very vocally, me). That cannot have been easy for our heroic IT people so hats very much off to them!

As of yesterday, I have assessed PhDs in 5 countries: Norway, Denmark, Finland, USA, and Canada. Fun fact: only those in Norway (Bergen) and Denmark (Copenhagen) were in musicology! (Finland/Helsinki: Philosophy; USA/Temple: Africology and African-American Studies; Canada/Concordia: Humanities).

To me, a lot of this tomfoolery happens because folks don't understand sci-fi. When we write stories with Dyson Spheres we know there's not enough matter in the solar system available to build one. It's just a conceit, a Once Upon a Time. Like FTL travel. These folks never explored the ideas.
