A timeless classic: 1984 by George Orwell Introduced by the courageous Guardian editor-in-chief Alan Rusbridger who broke the Edward Snowden story. A very good read in its own right. But also an insight as why monsters need war to keep control. Power, pure power is all that matters.

Stepping away from knowledge, towards mystery and inner experience can be a powerful thing. Something easy to forget when growing up. Something my father and a good friend told me recently to do more. Myself knocking at my door asking: will you not come out to play?

A page turner packed with adventure in an exotic place and time. Literary escapisme in its most wholesome form. And what an ending! Wayne Turmel is a master storyteller. A conjuror of atmosphere, a creator of unforgettable characters human and animal. Reading it is living it. Very good indeed.

My first Ursula Le Guin. Loved the story in this brilliant Folio Society edition. A wizard of Earthsea ‘In serious fantasy, the real battle is moral or internal… To do good, heroes must know or learn that the ‘axis of evil’ is within them. LeGuin As in real life I would say.

Without a doubt the book is a masterpiece. Such writing, such atmosphere, such plots and plot turns, so much evil evil characters. Such yearning for love. Read it and live your life exactly the opposite.

Gloomy, deliberate cruelty towards animals, children and gentle people. There is no hope, only revenge. No beauty only hardship and then you die. But i carried on till the end, reading then the incredible introduction by Patti Smith.

I never read reviews before reading a book so as to keep a clean palate before starting. I want to follow the path the writer has prepared for me. I started Wuthering Heights expecting a kind of easy calm Jane Austen experiance. It was horrible.

I can relate to this. Books have been, are and will be my refuge. I would add beauty as a separate concept. Libraries, writers, publishers, artists, universities, musea, places of learning, places of culture,… ideally free for all and free from interference are what keeps the world alive.

Dune by the great Frank Herbert. A perfect edition by Folio Society illustrated by the genial Sam Weber. Afterword by Brian Herbert with analysis of and writing tips. It is the second time reading but…so many layers and such addictive writing. Looking forward to the second book.

This book lingers in my mind. The Radetzky March by Joseph Roth 1932. Clapping along in the New Year concert I did not realise its military background. The book describes the decline and fall of a family and a doomed empire. The unnamed painter is my favorite character being a symbol of freedom.

Thinking about this book a lot. Peter Heather writes eloquently, logically, beautifully while searching for meaning and answers. What does it means to be a good Christian Roman emperor. Was Justinian a good emperor? Did he make possible the fall of the Roman Empire in the 7the century?

Every holiday I read one or two of Patrick O’Brians Aubrey-Maturin adventures. This year the penultimate one. The Hundred days. Painting the Royal Navy world of 1815 to perfection, Europe is in shock. While France reacts to the cries of Vive L’Empereur. The rest of Europe rallies to stop him.

Zo mooi geschreven.

Byzantium, the early centuries by John Julius Norwich. A very fine read. It ends with the coronation of Charlemagne and the overthrow of the empress Irene. A new handsome emperor of the West after all this time. I quite like Constantius IV 668-685 this time.
