It only very nearly took me 38 years to be able to say “because I don’t want one” when the cashier asked me, yet again, why I would not let her sign me up for the store’s Loyalty card.

Big sketch deadline coming up. Normally I would stay working until late and produce my best stuff after dark. Now, I am looking at my phone refreshing social media and trying to think of how to paint 12+ characters quicker 🥲 I should’ve read that text and measured my time more carefully…! 😂

This is the case in the UK because of PLR, which did not happen by magic, but because of two queer feminist writers: Maureen Duffy & Brigid Brophy, who also formulated & fought for ALCS. Know your history & also sign up for both!

Bluesky!!! Let me toot my little horn for the first time and share this interview - we spoke about To The Other Side, since I was lucky enough to receive the Diverse Book Award on the Picture Book category. And it was a lovely time - hope it makes ANY sense! C:

A few years ago I made a series of mini drawings of interesting Irish women (available as a print here www.ciaraioch.com/artprints/p/...) - this thread is a little information on the women featured, partly because it's useful, but mostly because I'm trying to be sustainable by recycling content.
Illustration featuring all the women of the Mini Mná series.

Hi, Bluesky! Figured I’d introduce myself properly. I’m the author and illustrator of To The Other Side, as well as illustrator of other books. I tuit in Spanish and English about migration, politics, books, walks, dogs, and now about being a parent. Basically, if it’s in my brain, it comes out.
Two masked children standing behind a fence, cover of To The Other Side.Quote from Kirkus Reviews on To The Other Side, stating “A gorgeously rendered, heartbreaking look at one family’s immigration experience”A boy sitting on the edge of a river that reflects a town different than the one we see on the top; cover of My Two Border Towns.A grandmother and a girl, sitting on child-sized furniture, sharing bread in a garden. Indeed. When they rounded up the Japanese Americans, myself and my family included, for internment during WWII out of fear over Japanese spies and saboteurs, two thirds of us were U.S. citizens. Don’t think it won’t happen again when they come for the “undocumented.”
Post from Latino pollster Mike Madrid:

“Doing some research for an upcoming article on the last “mass deportation” of Mexicans during the 1930’s.

Over half of those deported were US citizens.”

The difference in my own behaviour in this new app is that I used to tweet my every waking thought (“oh look! The leaves in the trees have all migrated south, like birds that forgot how to fly”). Now, I say it out loud in Spanish to a little child. Much to the amusement of the passerby.
