The problem is that politicians aren’t any better at managing monetary policy now than they were during the time of the ‘Great Moderation’. Donald Trump may want to assert control over the Fed – and politicians elsewhere may try to follow his example – but this is unlikely to result in better monetary policymaking. If anything, the policy environment is more complicated.

For too long, we have taken the rules-based-international system and the transatlantic alliance for granted. Those were the certainties that allowed us to imagine Europe as something ‘nice to have’ and not something necessary. It is time for Europeans to embrace a more fundamental perspective.

The debate over the EU’s omnibus legislation will not satisfy everyone in Europe, neither will the legislative process nor the outcome. European policymakers need to have a frank conversation with their voters about the stakes that are in play and the realistic alternatives.

The EU makes it possible for innovations in politics to be progressive and not just defensive. European democracy faces threats and challenges, but the EU gives Europeans a support structure that makes it possible to have greater hope in what they can accomplish.

The usual politics has reformers challenge institutions while conservatives preserve them. What happens when the conservatives start challenging institutions as well? Who is left to preserve the status quo? The answer is pretty terrifying when you think through the implications.
