Impressive EV growth in Europe so far this year With Trump determined to keep oil prices high should continue to accelerate in the coming months (And maybe Spain and Italy will finally join the party!)

They seem to have both tapped into oil reserves AND significantly reduced demand — by 9% in Q2 and likely more in Q3 — by accelerating EV adoption (esp EV trucks), shifting high-mileage uses to EVs, etc But can’t tap reserves forever …. www.carbonbrief.org/analysis-chi...

From 2019-2024 US primary energy consumption (PEC) stagnated at about 2400 MToe, dominated by fossil fuel use (~2000 MToe). By contrast, EU PEC declined 12% from about 1350 MTOE to 1200 MToe from 2019 to 2024. The dramatic difference between the US and EU reflects 1/

There were two people in that debate— if renewables don’t cause fossil fuel primary energy use to fall, the other guy is wrong👇 More importantly, if primary fossil fuel energy use remains the same or increases, all IPCC targets are out the window👇

By all means track emissions but emissions calculations/estimates can be faulty (fugitive emissions, overestimates of reductions from CCS etc) Why should we willfully blind ourselves to directly measuring progress on reducing/phasing out use of fossil fuels, as the IPCC recognizes we must?👇 1/

What matters for atmospheric GHGs is how much fossil fuels we burn, not mix/%s👇 Using magic words “primary energy fallacy” doesn’t change that—the mix is irrelevant Remains to be seen whether we’re on track for a rapid fossil fuel phase out — IMO current path is too slow + unnecessarily risky

Similarly even though primary energy is a poor measure for some purposes (primary energy fallacy) in terms of evaluating climate impact total primary energy use is a better measure than final energy And it ain’t pretty 👇

Counterpoints below The atmosphere doesn’t care about the relative progress of renewable energy, absolute amounts burned are what lead to more CO2, CO etc in the atmosphere

That’s true, but the trends that have made EV Semis competitive were already well documented by then (example below from 2021) But the « clean energy world » has a hard time fully appreciating the double whammy of rapidly falling prices at the same time batteries become lighter + longer lasting

Maybe most striking: 80% of the most highly educated Republicans lack even a basic understanding of climate change science Versus only 10% of Democrats with similar education level It’s a cult
011
Eric Walters @ericwalters.bsky.social · 30/05/2026
Half of Americans — and ~80% of Republicans — are so brainwashed by fossil fuel propaganda and an extreme right cult they lack the most basic knowledge of climate change

Meh At the end of the day WSJ continues to enthusiastically support the party of dictatorship over democrats They’re just upset he’s so bad at his job he’s weakening his party and, god forbid, more Democrats — large and small D — might be in power and the oligarchs won’t get everything they want

This 👆is an excellent example of what the paper called a “nuclear imaginary” — a vision of future nuclear abundance that never seems to be realized While renewable growth has repeatedly proven wrong mainstream analysts (not to mention skeptics) and far exceeded expectations👇

In 2025 solar+wind generation worldwide increased by 841 TWh, 24X higher than nuclear’s 35 TWh per Ember Even if China continues to expand its nuclear production (+27 TWh in 2025) it will likely continue to barely make a dent compared to solar, wind and batteries, which are growing much faster

Eric Walters @ericwalters.bsky.social · 05/05/2026
Unpopular take— Nuclear advocates get away with playing “the adult in the room” (not like those wild-eyed renewable energy people) while in fact living in an imaginary world divorced from reality

I love Ember but their chart understates the potential Lumping stagnant nuc, hydro and “other” for an average 7.6% rate dilutes the growth potential for the coming years which will be driven primarily by solar’s impressive growth — 30% YoY and 75% of 2025 demand growth Nuc+hydro are ~irrelevant

That’s a pretty picture for the future of renewable energy
Battery prices continued their free fall while installations surged in 2025

Underappreciated point from @ember-energy.org’s annual electricity review — New solar generation in 2025 was, by itself, sufficient to displace 100% of the electricity that could have been generated by 100% of the LNG exports through the Strait of Hormuz last year
New solar generation in 2025 would be sufficient to displace electricity equivalent to all LNG exports through Strait of Hormuz

It’s been clear from the get go that Elon Musk structured X as a vehicle to amplify the views of Elon Musk That core purpose has never changed and is borne out by the data now more than ever

Thank you!! AP didn’t just bury the lede — that Trump threatened genocide — they completely ignored it. Le Monde — in contrast — had it front and center

One unfortunate dynamic is that people have short memories and tend to lose their sense of urgency as soon as the crisis dies down (for example, slowing European solar growth by 2024 👇) We still see progress, but nowhere near as fast as it could and should be for climate and energy independence

The IEA is doing that thing again where they predict growth in renewable energy additions will quickly grind to a halt The fact that anyone pays attention to these clowns after such a long and illustrious reign of error is remarkable

Eric Walters @ericwalters.bsky.social · 12/11/2025
It would be hilarious if it weren’t so sad that even in the “Stated Policies” scenario the IEA keeps making the same comically bad renewable projections No, IEA, growth of renewable energy additions (circled in red) isn’t going to magically slow and then grind to a halt in a few years

Another example of rooftop solar and batteries accelerating adoption of renewables — 100K Australians install a massive 2GWh of 🔋 in only 7 weeks, with a large backlog ☀️+🔋 system sizes are growing rapidly as prices fall

The economics, along with political support in some states will help renewables continue to grow but there is little doubt that growth will be slowed by Trump’s policies (especially offshore wind)

With the US$750 billion the EU has agreed to burn on US fossil fuels in the next 3 years Europe could instead add ~10X the solar and wind installed in 2024 Almost doubling its entire installed wind and solar capacity So burn cash into GHGs or Build clean energy independence for years to come?

China’s solar growth has been impressive but to be fair most of the difference in that chart reflects China’s rapid growth in overall electricity generation compared to the US The difference in percent of generation is much more modest — 8.2% v. 6.9% — although it’s likely to grow
Solar electricity generation in China as percent of grid has been only modestly faster than in the US

Such ugly dissension. And to think it was only a few months ago they had a harmonious kumbaya moment and unanimously said “nah, never mind” to that awkward part of the Constitution that says insurrectionists who swore an oath “shall” never hold office again.
