In which I try and fail to organize the many thoughts and feelings I have about Dust Kunkel's amazing new novel, which you should absolutely read. Please re-post! We need to talk this book up! www.youtube.com/watch?v=yOg9...

um well all my publishing is books, but I do academic and weird fiction. Are you a writer?

Eric Ortlund @ericortlund.bsky.social · 18/08/2025

Yeah. There is some really good pop music (Taylor Swift has a lot of talent) but mostly I listen and think "I'm not convinced."

I'm over-reacting when I write that ... but it always feels like I'm being lied to - encouraged to look away from reality and just enjoy myself and pretend everything is ok. What do you think?

Had a great time talking with a new friend about how the Bible is way more interesting than we think and why suffering is oddly dignifying. Also, he says way too many nice things about me. www.youtube.com/watch?v=r633...

literally nothing stopping you enjoying whatever you want, for however long. i feel like this is really important information that might break reality if it gets out but still it seems worth saying. ]]]]])))))) (normal life resumes)

[really quiet whispery voice] uh so guys guess what you can read whatever you want, whenever. you don't have a finish a book, and you can skip boring parts if you want. you can read 17 things at once, and change whenever you want to, just for a different taste in your mind.

My friend Chuck has written a really great fantasy adventure - very much worth reading!

Another great paragraph from Chuck Hackney's Chosen by the Sword. This book is really growing on me.

(PS - *Severe* nuance to #2 - I will always support other writers, but my rule for when I send writing to someone else, or when someone else sends me theirs, is absolute brutal honesty. And I'm picky about the writing I like. Caveat emptor and all that.)

3) I need your support too? Here we are, actually alive, and able to speak. So let's listen and support each other? Yes?

But there *are* some good things that can happen here which I've been missing. So can I say: 1) I'm looking at the pile of books I'm going to read on Saturday and so grateful for them? 2) If you're a writer, I'm here to support you? So reach out?

OK so I haven't been posting much because I unexpectedly had extra teaching this semester which has been pretty stressful. Which obviously, I mean, in terms of daily obligations, typing on facebook is low on the list.

A new urban fantasy from my friend Chuck Hackney, a professor of psychology and martial arts enthusiast. It's got a really exciting first page and is disarmingly funny - and great reviews on Amazon. Consider buying! #urbanfantasy #fantasy #writersofbluesky

It's lovely to think that everything of God is in all of God, all the time - if that makes sense. Everything of Eric is not in all of Eric, because I'm a created being and I have parts. God is different.

Hi Bluesky! I'm not here to argue politics or religion, or be a jerk to anyone. Only to make the world a slightly more shalom type place. Also talk about the writing and music I love, and the magic and music that is just beyond the edge of normal sight. Also here to gush about Gene Wolfe.

I'm nearly finishing Gene Wolfe's Shadow of the Torturer for the first time and I'm on that magical "Wait, what do you m... OHhhhhhh" moment, so typical of his works. Reading Wolfe is always a bit of an investigation game. You aren't allowed to read his works passively.

Maybe this will be one you need too? Maybe, through a metaphor about death, you'll find ways to live and keep going? (Available on amazon) Also, they're not really #zombies - something deeper, darker, quieter, more fascinating.

So perhaps modesty does not forbid mentioning a book from 2013. It's certainly not perfect (the writing in the early parts is unfortunately rough) but one of the reasons I write is that there are stories out there that I need that I can't find. So, I write them myself.
