So Geller has had 10 years to pay restitution and has done what exactly in that time?

I'm also convinced that if you're going to support the death penalty, you need to own that you support the state taking a life. Killing is a messy act, don't shy away from this. A firing squad or even a guillotine is clearly more humane than the horror show of a lethal injection.

I'm convinced proponents want a sanitized version of execution that doesn't appear to be gruesome. Even with injections, look at the cocktail used, there's no reason to include a paralytic unless the goal is to make the victim unable to show duress.

Also demon enbies, what's not to like?
The player is playfully greeted by one of the aforementioned "demon enbies" saying "let's get fired up, mortal".

One of my favorite games looks like this. The art style is simple and purposely retro. But it's also clean, the designs are memorable, and by not chasing high fidelity graphics it has a more timeless quality that will age better than modern photorealism.
Screenshot from Void Stranger. A black and white sprite game with the player's character shown top down in a puzzle level.

Public health scientists embarrassed him in his first term by telling the truth about a pandemic so everyone in the field is now an enemy. This makes it very easy for him to align himself with RFK's quack movement.

Not entirely unlike the same people who defended big tobacco by obfuscating the link the cancer were the same way defended big oil by obfuscating the evidence for climate change.

The image is of a four panel comic.
The first panel shows Sarah, the protagonist, working at a desk. A brain next to her says, "We need to take breaks!"
The second panel zooms in on Sarah's face. She is annoyed. She says, "What if I don't listen to you?"
The third panel shows the brain smiling.
The fourth panel shows the brain reaching towards a lever. The brain says, "I'LL MAKE YOU."

I also think that the underlying market matters a lot. Actions that are benign and 'show authentic personality' in a strong jobs market are 'unprofessional and disqualifying' in a weak hiring environment. Not to mention sector to sector variance.

Anthropic got their headline, so they don't care. After all, it doesn't have to actually work they just need to convince investors it might.

I continue to find the complaints about "overhead" to be deeply unserious. Obviously there is a cost to maintaining lab space, office space, providing electricity, clerical services, and even shared resources like core laboratories. These all cost money and are needed, but are framed as waste.

Also, people need to eat even if they're laid off.

Ericnonymous @ericnonymous.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
What we don't know is whatever spending that money on computers solves problems more cost effectively than spending it on people. Or if spending it on people yields secondary benefits while working on solving the intended problem that compute doesn't provide.
010
Ericnonymous @ericnonymous.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
OpenAI's efforts here were a large undertaking with a staggering amount of compute. We do not know what would have happened if those same dollars were spent on people. What we do know is that, historically, funding people to research a problem is a good way to solve it.
100
Ericnonymous @ericnonymous.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
But not the years worth of funding to actually work on the problem. I think you're actively avoiding the point that the alternative to ChatGPT isn't business as usual, it's funding hundreds of mathematicians to focus their efforts on a single question.
120
Ericnonymous @ericnonymous.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
I'm sure there were already a lot of resources spent on the problem. That's not really the point, especially since those learnings were used by the LLM. It's the unknown whether the problem was solved because the new technology is just that good vs solved because resources were invested.
120
Ericnonymous @ericnonymous.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
But that might invite criticism and skepticism about their great technology.
020
Ericnonymous @ericnonymous.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
I think they also want us to avoid thinking about how much compute they spent on the problem and how many mathematicians they could have employed for the same amount of money.

Minneapolis literally pass a non-discrimination ordinance in 1975 to protect trans people.
Except of the passage, which prohibits discrimination for "affectional preferance", "'Affectional Preference' mean having or manifesting an emotional or physical attachment to another consenting person or persons, or having or manifesting a preference for such attachement, or having or projecting a self-image not associated with one's biological maleness of one's biological femaleness."

I think it's bad, actually, for a politician to say he would vote to outlaw a type of healthcare for children. Also, surgery is by definition transformative, that's the point of medical interventions.
000
Ericnonymous @ericnonymous.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
The issues being debated aren't about how to expand transgender rights and protections, it's primarily about maintaining them vs losing them with "moderates" advocating for trans people to sacrifice some rights so bigots feel more comfortable.
020
Ericnonymous @ericnonymous.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
And this is something that I think is underappreciated here. The "discourse" is acting like trans athletes are a new phenomenon, not something that has decades of history behind it. Or treatment of trans youth as new and radical, as opposed to mainstream medical consensus.
120
Ericnonymous @ericnonymous.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
I'm more critical of him saying he would vote to ban medical treatment for trans people.
010
Ericnonymous @ericnonymous.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
Then they can't be upset that trans people are upset. If you want the votes of trans people, you need to support them. If you think their votes are irrelevant, then you don't get to act upset when they reject you after you reject them.

It's also just profoundly weird to ask politicians for their take on a medical issue. Are we also going to ask them what the dosing guidelines should be for insulin? Or what stains the pathology lab should use?

Big pharma also piggybacks off of whatever academia is focused on because that's who does the fundamental work. The NIH has not done a very good job of funding research into women's health. There was a movement to try to correct this, but now "woman" is a DEI word that gets your grant flagged.
