We desperately need cheap 4k disc players and video stores to become popular again. It would solve so many issues plaguing Hollywood.

The frustrating part of the "low-tech" framing is any modern disc release will almost certainly look better than streaming at the same resolution. Especially a 4k disc -- it will have better compression and sound, without a doubt. It's the best way to watch a movie at home, no contest.

I recently lost a beloved cat (found her at 5 weeks old and raised her to just shy of 17 years) and I regularly find myself thinking how cosmically lucky I am to have shared this brief moment in time with her. She was a very special cat, but I suppose they all are to some degree, aren’t they?

The best demo I've seen from other sources is when the internal screen is folded -- makes the top half the viewer and the bottom half the controls, but that's a big loss in real estate overall when mattes are considered.

Eric J. Robbins @ericjrobbins.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
Internally with both screens, it's 1:1.42. Externally / split internally it's a wider at approximately 1:1.45. Very curious to see film / TV letterboxed on it, because I'm not a fan of the full screen modes shown. When the front is vertical (ugh) there appears to be massive loss of the frame.

Remind me, Condi, who was the national security advisor to George W. Bush during 9/11 and through the fabrication of WMD evidence that led to the aimless "War on Terror"? I want to say it was someone from the Hoover Institution, but I just cannot remember their name.

Eric J. Robbins @ericjrobbins.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
Ah yes, the "Hoover Institution", the first group I associate with Condoleezza Rice. There have been some real asinine and tone-deaf statements today from political figures from both major parties that seem to have zero recollection of what 9/11 and the horrors it spawned were actually like.

Claire Willett is a real one. The Star Trek Snack Squad delivered a massive amount of supplies to the picket lines in 2023. I hope the fans that contributed know just how much we appreciated it; you all kept a lot of folks cool and fueled during a very difficult time.

This thread is growing unwieldy, so I'll stop here for now. Suffice it to say, my love of Star Trek has been lifelong and continues to this day. I've met actors and writers from every series, and it takes all my self control to keep it professional when I really just want to geek out. LLAP. 🖖

TOS and TNG defined my love of Trek in childhood. I would come to DS9, Voyager, and Enterprise later and am a fan of all three. DS9 in particular is, to me, Trek's high-water mark in terms of writing; it brings the horrors of war to the utopia and shows the cost to preserve it.

The one Trek nerd fight I avoid at all costs is "which ship is your favorite?" Because truthfully, I could never pick between the Constitution refit and the Galaxy class. How could anyone choose one over the other?

TNG eventually became more accessible, and is the series I find the most comforting. It's like a nice blanket or sweater -- it wraps around and comforts the viewer. A personal favorite is "Family", which breaks Picard's stoicism to show the man underneath. Incredible work from Patrick Stewart.

TOS episodes eventually led to the TOS movies. 2 and 4 rightly get a lot of praise (and people seem to be coming around on Search for Spock, which was oddly my favorite as a child) but I will always take the opportunity to sing the praises of Undiscovered Country, which is my favorite Trek film.

An episode that I remember resonating is a classic: "The Devil in the Dark", which blew my mind by making its "monster" sympathetic, a victim of misunderstanding and fear. It was a story that made me examine how I interacted with and reacted to the world.

This anniversary has me ruminating on the various series / films and my experiences with them. TNG aired on a channel with poor reception in rural Arkansas, so I started with TOS via reruns (on the one clear channel) and by renting it on VHS from the video store (betraying my age.)

60 years ago today, Star Trek premiered in the US. To say it's had an impact on my life would be an understatement. Some of my earliest exposure to screenwriting was via scripts for TNG and the TOS films. To write for and be a part of it has been a real joy and privilege. Here's to the next 60! 🖖

Enjoyed a great double feature at the theater today. Both “Coyote vs Acme” and “Buddy” are worth a watch. Two radically different yet very well directed and well constructed films. “Buddy” isn’t for everyone, but if you’re a fan of “Too Many Cooks” it’ll likely be up your alley.

Specifically plaguing Netflix is their inability to admit the binge model is flawed; it puts such a tight timeline on word of mouth that shows can't grow and find their audience before a renewal decision is needed, to say nothing of shows immediately leaving the viewers' minds once finished.

This is great, Noah! I'm Eric J. Robbins; I wrote two episodes of "Star Trek: Discovery", where I served as staff writer. Currently hoping to find work as a story editor. I'm interested in a wide range of dramatic television, but tend to write horror and science fiction when left to my own devices.

As someone also going through a very tough week, I find the random moments of being silly or goofy help keep me sane. Sorry you’re struggling right now — a house flood is very intense — but I know myself and others look forward to the time you feel like being goofy again. Hang in there.

If a calculator told you 2+2 = 5, you'd call it an error. If a GPS told you to turn onto a road that doesn't exist, it would be an error. When AI makes up inaccurate or just plain wrong information, guess what? That's an error. Calling it a "hallucination" humanizes a technological mistake.

One of the most memorable screenings I've been to in the last few years was "Undiscovered Country" (which I love) the day after the Pennsylvania assassination attempt on Trump. Nicholas Meyer introduced the movie and noted how much its context had changed in just 24 hours.

Again, if I've missed something specific please enlighten me, because as far as I can tell there's next to no one upset about this release (which will justifiably do gangbusters for Criterion)

We don't have to pay attention to a few negative folks when they are outliers looking for anything to complain about (the Criterion subreddit post about the November releases has 500+ comments, the vast majority of which are overwhelmingly positive). Let's not pretend they're the norm or widespread.

I'm seeing increasing discussion on #filmsky about Criterion fans being upset about "KPop Demon Hunters", but all I've seen are reactions to the supposed upset folks and maybe four comments on the subreddit that are negative. Every other reaction is overwhelmingly positive. Did I miss something?

This was the subtext of the Democrats' economic message in 2024 and we all saw how well that worked out for them. Unfortunately we grade the GOP on a curve, so I expect we'll continue to see a fraction of the articles we saw about Biden's handling of the economy and inflation.

Exactly! I just don’t believe a massive conglomerate with $80B in debt can afford to move two lots to a new location with minimal operational and professional infrastructure.

Wow, what mealy-mouthed pressure to commit to theatrical. "At least 45 days (preferably 60 days or more)" -- way to negotiate against yourself in your own letter! The only lesson the studios are gonna take from this is if they threaten to leave LA the unions will roll over.

Famously chill filmmaker, James Cameron. I was at a Q&A with him before the release of "Avatar" where someone was stammering out a question about his behavior on set. Cameron leaned forward and bluntly said, "are you trying to ask if I'm an asshole?" He said he did what was needed for his films.

One of the best scenes in that season is seeing Shaw's realization that these guys, as much trouble as they've been, aren't full of shit. The encounter with the Intrepid activates him and he goes full Starfleet captain immediately as opposed to remaining an obstacle. Great midpoint for his arc.

*"A New Beginning", not "The New Blood". Those subtitles are tough to keep straight on some of those 80s horror franchises!

The lack of a gap year between "The Final Chapter" and "The New Blood" amuses the cynic in me. They couldn't even commit to letting it rest for a year after "ending" the franchise!

Adding to Phil's excellent point -- at the end of this merger, Paramount-Skydance will be saddled with $80b in steadily-growing debt. In what world can they afford to pack up and move two lots across the country to a state with very little operational infrastructure?

Is anyone actually offended by this show? For fuck's sake, the X-rated "Fritz the Cat" came out 54 years ago and has scenes about US race relations, our devotion to Israel, drug use, group sex, and revolutionary politics. As far as I can tell, the "offensive" aspect of "Alley Cats" is... they swear?

What's especially infuriating is there are large blocks of VFX artists and crew in the credits for all of these films -- it's not like it's a secret! What do these people think, that DNEG paid the several hundred artists credited on "The Odyssey" to sit around and twiddle their thumbs?

Especially infuriating when the end spoiler is part of the main pull quote for that review. I'm all for digging into a movie and examining its themes and social implications, but allow the reader to make the choice whether or not to have the specifics of the ending spelled out for them!

First off, how in the hell was this film not called "The Urge"? The Guardian's review ends with this scathing point:
From The Guardian's review of "One Night Only": There's both too much yet not enough world-building here, enough questions answered to encourage us to ask 10 more (why does no one mention masturbation and wouldn't that also trigger the biosensors?) It's also just too unavoidably grim of a premise, especially at a dark political moment such as this, for us to ignore the ramifications or root for characters who aren't trying to actively destroy such a barbaric system (what if Katniss just had fun during those Hunger Games?) Instead, One Night Only weirdly plays like lulling government propaganda, a film about sex purge to be released in time for sex purge that says actually maybe sex purge is a good idea after all.
