Remind me, Condi, who was the national security advisor to George W. Bush during 9/11 and through the fabrication of WMD evidence that led to the aimless "War on Terror"? I want to say it was someone from the Hoover Institution, but I just cannot remember their name.

Is there anything more stressful for LA cinephiles than the @amcinematheque.bsky.social's waiting room for Beyond Fest?

The one Trek nerd fight I avoid at all costs is "which ship is your favorite?" Because truthfully, I could never pick between the Constitution refit and the Galaxy class. How could anyone choose one over the other?

TNG eventually became more accessible, and is the series I find the most comforting. It's like a nice blanket or sweater -- it wraps around and comforts the viewer. A personal favorite is "Family", which breaks Picard's stoicism to show the man underneath. Incredible work from Patrick Stewart.

TOS episodes eventually led to the TOS movies. 2 and 4 rightly get a lot of praise (and people seem to be coming around on Search for Spock, which was oddly my favorite as a child) but I will always take the opportunity to sing the praises of Undiscovered Country, which is my favorite Trek film.

An episode that I remember resonating is a classic: "The Devil in the Dark", which blew my mind by making its "monster" sympathetic, a victim of misunderstanding and fear. It was a story that made me examine how I interacted with and reacted to the world.

60 years ago today, Star Trek premiered in the US. To say it's had an impact on my life would be an understatement. Some of my earliest exposure to screenwriting was via scripts for TNG and the TOS films. To write for and be a part of it has been a real joy and privilege. Here's to the next 60! 🖖

Enjoyed a great double feature at the theater today. Both “Coyote vs Acme” and “Buddy” are worth a watch. Two radically different yet very well directed and well constructed films. “Buddy” isn’t for everyone, but if you’re a fan of “Too Many Cooks” it’ll likely be up your alley.

First off, how in the hell was this film not called "The Urge"? The Guardian's review ends with this scathing point:
From The Guardian's review of "One Night Only": There's both too much yet not enough world-building here, enough questions answered to encourage us to ask 10 more (why does no one mention masturbation and wouldn't that also trigger the biosensors?) It's also just too unavoidably grim of a premise, especially at a dark political moment such as this, for us to ignore the ramifications or root for characters who aren't trying to actively destroy such a barbaric system (what if Katniss just had fun during those Hunger Games?) Instead, One Night Only weirdly plays like lulling government propaganda, a film about sex purge to be released in time for sex purge that says actually maybe sex purge is a good idea after all.

To Dan's point, this is the only film I can think of that had a similarly protracted production, and that's with a very large asterisk since most of the early footage was repurposed.

In 5x08, "Labyrinths", there's a sequence where the Breen watch their soldiers be attacked and defeated via helmet cameras. Gee whiz, wonder where I got that idea... (To give myself a little credit, this was a late change to help relieve the stunt demands on our production team.)

Today is the 40th anniversary of the release of "Aliens", arguably the movie that has influenced my life and work more than any other. It is truly one of the exemplary blockbusters made for an adult audience. The last 35 minutes is a relentless rollercoaster and an action masterclass.

I also highly recommend "Hunt for the Wilderpeople", Taika Waititi's offbeat adventure comedy where Neill plays an incredibly reluctant and gruff foster dad. He truly was an actor on immense chemistry and range that could play off anyone.

JP is obviously a heavy-hitter for many artists my age, and I am of course a fan of his genre work ("In the Mouth of Madness" especially.) In college, I watched Jane Campion's "The Piano" after having seen is satirized so many times; it blew me away, and Neill's performance is one of his best.

"Jurassic Park" was the first film I saw in theaters. It blew my mind and changed my life. After my dad and I returned home I begged my mom to take me back to the theater to see the next screening; thankfully she wanted to see the film, so back we went. RIP Sam Neill.

Damn do I love “The Pitt”. I grew up around medicine — multiple doctors and medical professionals in the family, close friends that are physicians — and it truly captures all the personalities and pressures of that world. It’s great TV, and we need more shows like it (15+ episodes and shot in LA)

Well, this was an unexpected find in a vintage store. In the 90s, O.J. Simpson was the guest star on Disney’s “Adventures in Wonderland”. After his 1994 arrest, the episode (titled “White Rabbits Can’t Jump”) was‘t released, but this storybook adaptation had already made it to stores.

In honor of Artemis II breaking their record, I rewatched Ron Howard's "Apollo 13" last night. What a spectacular movie that has aged magnificently. I'm not much of a "Braveheart" fan for multiple reasons -- this is the film that should have beat it for Best Picture.

Last night, I watched the 1979 Canadian disaster film "City on Fire". It takes its time getting to the premise, but once it ramps up there's a lot of fun pyrotechnic and stunt work. It opens with this ominous frame:

Last night's screening of "Never Too Young to Die" at @vidiots.bsky.social was the most fun I've had in a theater in some time. It featured a very memorable intro and Q&A afterwards with fan of the film Johnny Knoxville, star John Stamos, and director Gil Bettman.

"There was no plan. I don’t have a plan. You have plans. But out there, you can’t. I don’t choose to do the things I have to do. They just keep happening." A great line for Maximus, but also one that resonates with any RPG player who returns to a game months later and forgets what they were doing.

There's a lot of misery right now, so I wanted to share something bringing me a sliver of joy -- I'm greatly enjoying the second season of "Fallout" It accurately captures how any goal in the games is beset upon by a multitude of distractions -- some dangerous, some silly, or a combination thereof.

Some 2025 Letterboxd stats. Down in screenings a little from last year (155). Seeing "Mimic" at Beyond Fest pushed Brolin and del Toro into the top viewed spots. I saw 4 titles from both, which tied with Jamie Lee Curtis (boosted by a "Halloween" / "Halloween II" double) and Steven Spielberg.
Letterboxd stats for Eric in 2025 -- 132 films watched, 31 reviewed. Josh Brolin and Guillermo del Toro are the most viewed actor and director, respectively.More Letterboxd stats, including the terrible first watch of 2025 -- "DMX", starring Steven Seagal. Surely no one would be dumb enough to start another year with a screening of a Steven Seagal movie. Surely. Last movie of the year -- "When Harry Met Sally". RIP Rob Reiner.
