🕸️ Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-tober Day One: The Homemade Suit 🕸️

Eric Gapstur @ericgapstur.bsky.social · 25/09/2026

Christos is the kindest person on the entire planet for saying this. I’m pleased and humbled by the comparison, Paul Smith is one of the greats. Here’s hoping I’m doing his excellent scripts justice!

I rarely have time to do preliminary drawings for a series, and most of my designs are figured out on the page. However, for Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man: Season 2 I was able to get these first attempts down to figure out proportions and how I would approach rendering the suit.

His Fantastic Four run was a must read for me as a kid. Would love a page from that run!

One of the best from Humberto’s run! Very lucky to run into it.

It’s my favorite! This page sits above my drawing table. I also had a letter published in #16, when I was 12.

Setup at the ISU Memorial Union earlier this year. So cool to see my Spider-Man book being sold on campus. Quite possibly the only Cyclone to draw the webhead 💪

Speaking of Scott McDaniel’s influence, his use of the DeLuca effect left a big impression on me. From Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #4, with Jim Campbell and Joe Caramagna.

Scott’s cartooning and dynamism continues to influence to this day. Karl’s inks lent a solid heft and weight that perfectly complemented Scott’s high contrast approach. And the John Costanza lettering on the board is the cherry on top.

Changing up the OA inspiration on the board to this gem- Nightwing #14 page 9 by Scott McDaniel and Karl Story. Scott’s artwork has been an inspiration since I was a kid.

Both fans and imitators key on the mannerisms of Quitely's style: full lips, pebbly mark-making, few spot blacks, visible seams. But those quirks are hung on a frame of high fidelity draftsmanship. The subtly receding shield and gestural hair on the nape of the neck describe the figure sublimely.

I’m fortunate to look at Sal’s work in person every day- a page from Spectacular Spider-Girl with his inks over Ron Frenz’s pencils sits atop my desk, bringing a smile every day. Safe travels, Sal. Thanks for everything.

His influence is still with me today, as you can see by last’s week’s issue of Marvel Rivals, where I do my best impression of a Sal Buscema haymaker.

Eric Gapstur @ericgapstur.bsky.social · 27/01/2026

RIP to a legend, Sal Buscema. One of the core 4 Spider-Man artists of my youth, Sal drew Spectacular Spider-Man 191, the 3rd comic I ever bought. I was captivated by the energy in those panels, and I remember it was a Sal’s Spidey that I first attempted to draw- the last page splash from issue 183.

I had a much better handle of how to go about drawing Infinity Comics on paper this go round. Each page of script is five panels, so I bumped panel five to the next page in order to give panel one the larger space to sell Galacta’s excitement and Luna’s exasperation.

I will say when I watched it with my kids a month or so ago the egg and juice smoothie was pretty jarring. Had no idea people did that.
