I dunno when the bubble bursts maybe there’ll be cheap cards again.

Well even people that can afford to have kids aren’t doing it, or having fewer. Turns out if you give people the choice between kid or bigger house, a portion will go for bigger house.

Because modern economies is built on the assumption of slow stable population growth. If a country’s population shrinks it will eventually destabilize the country.

I interpreted 240 justices as unpacking. Isn’t he saying add justices until the court is majority democrat?

I feel lime the other issue is that restricting suffrage is too far outside the Overton window to be worth talking about. Undermining republican sources of funding, like car salesmen, real estate agents, health supplements, feels more likely to happen so it makes sense to focus on that.

I feel like the only criteria for disenfranchising Americans that couldn’t be abused would be to disenfranchise people based on if they voted for Trump. Which is probably the best possible criteria.

I mean gore “lost” Florida by 500 votes. You’re telling me at least 500 of the 100,000 people who voted for Nader wouldn’t have voted for gore? Nader easily took the margin of votes Gore needed to win. I’m not saying it was the ONLY factor, but it was A factor

ericforest.bsky.social @ericforest.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
This reminds me a little of recent discussion about Nader’s 2000 run. Nader supporters argue since he wasn’t the ONLY reason gore lost, he wasn’t responsible for gore losing. But just because he wasn’t the only factor doesn’t mean he wasn’t A factor. And it’s the same with candidate gender today.

I guess when I say drag I mean when you factor in votes gained and lost because of gender there’s a net loss overall, and I think it’s small but just based on people I’ve talked to (I’ve canvassed too 😬) I think it’s a little more than half a percentage.

I don’t think a woman can’t win the presidency but I think it’s possible it’s a small drag. It’s like having an extra third party candidate siphoning a percentage point or two. I do think AOC is talented and popular enough that she can overcome that drag.

I don’t know if I can even defend that? It seems self evident to me. I mean reading is still the primary way people learn information. The more you read the better you are at it and it’s a key skill in order to be a functional member of society.

I guess I mean critique? Like I said, both the hunger games and DCC apply the cultural touchstones of reality tv and celebrity culture to death games as a form of criticism. It isn’t the deepest criticism but theyre both mass market entertainment, not a cultural studies journal.
000
ericforest.bsky.social @ericforest.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
I think it’s better to read than not read. There are definitely many, many better things to read than DCC, but if a persons alternative to reading DCC is to not read, than it’s better to get some reading in. But that’s just my opinion.

ericforest.bsky.social @ericforest.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
I mean it’s a send up in the same way the hunger games are a send up: it’s showing a system that takes something horrible and showing and mines it for entertainment as a reflection of the way our own entertainment industry mines personal tragedy and conflict for entertainment.

And sure the solutions it offers are mostly violent, it’s an action series. You shouldn’t really expect it to solve capitalism. If it offers any message it’s that personal connections and community are the best way to overcome a hostile system.
000
ericforest.bsky.social @ericforest.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
I mean it does a good job of showing how the entertainment industry is exploitive but can be exploited in turn, it shows how personal bonds of community can overcome rapacious systems, it’s about carving out personal space in a surveillance state.

It seems weird you’re singling out DCC then, if your problem is with lit rpgs as a whole. I mean it’s a shallow genre, but at least it’s still reading? It’s probably better for you than playing a video game.
110
ericforest.bsky.social @ericforest.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
And the series is a good a sendup of gamer and fan culture. The fact Carl hates the game he’s in and is actively trying to sabotage it adds some interesting layers to the story. It adds a bit of commentary about capitalism and media as exploitation.

ericforest.bsky.social @ericforest.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
I mean it’s no Everlasting or Spear Cuts through Water, but I think there’s a reason DCC stands out from other lit rpgs. The relationship between Carl and donut has a genuine emotional core, the lore is more complex than most sinilar series and dinnamen doles it out at a good slow pace.

I think making US support conditional on Israel meeting certain humanitarian benchmarks would be more effective. So set dates for ending military operations in Gaza, rebuilding infrastructure, and eventually statehood. If they don’t meet the goal by a certain date cut support by 20%.

Just reading this thread and I like that this is is the point at which you realize drop your original argument because you realized it makes no sense and switch to “you should be nice to me or I won’t vote!”

Which is how I interpret the original quote tweet, that foreign policy can’t just follow public opinion because the approach has to be more sophisticated that what the public is usually pushing for. Biden’s unconditional support was immoral, but that doesn’t mean the opposite is the best policy.

ericforest.bsky.social @ericforest.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
I feel like a lot of people on here, at least, do think the US just has to pull a lever to stop all the violence. That being the “cut off all support” lever.

ericforest.bsky.social @ericforest.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
The impression I’ve gotten from some FP people is that what voters want the US to do (stop supporting Israel) won’t get them what they want (an end to Israeli violence against Palestinians) That’s how interpreted this tweet, that voters preferences won’t have the desired outcome.

I mean I don’t have to worry about it, I don’t live in Texas. But as a general point, people like you are the the ones who willing to sacrifice any real chance for change out of some warped obsession with posturing and language.

Going back to my original comment, this is why I wish the US could have more parties, when the democrats don’t pass a litmus test, we get this deluge of lefties telling people not to vote, but in Canada when the liberals threw trans people under the bus, you could all just go vote for the NDP.
100
ericforest.bsky.social @ericforest.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
Also, as a Canadian you probably don’t know this, but this is the kind of thing that gets decided through the courts in the US. So the most realistic positive outcome is talarico gets elected, she votes to expand the Supreme Court, and the court decides trans athletes are a protected class.

This is very funny to me, I just spent a week going back and forth with a former friend who went TERF, pointing out all her BS hypocrisy. I think i wrote about 30,000 words before she blocked me.

I mean the other possibilities are there is not trans rights bill, or no more congress, at least not one that matters. so the world where a trans rights bill is up for a vote is the best possible world

If there was federal legislation to protect trans students or athletes up for a vote and the dems needed talarico to vote for it, he would.
100
ericforest.bsky.social @ericforest.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
This ain’t really about states rights. It’s just not something the federal government has jurisdiction over.
100
ericforest.bsky.social @ericforest.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
Omg you’re really Canadian? That’s so funny. That’s crazy. I can’t imagine arguing with a Canadian about their national politics.
010
ericforest.bsky.social @ericforest.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
I’m pretty sure Talarico will have no say over what sports leagues trans athletes play in. It’s an entirely local issue the federal government has no power over.

ericforest.bsky.social @ericforest.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
Yeah, see? It’d be great if you had some other party to go take these feelings to, and regular Dems didn’t have to listen to it.

ericforest.bsky.social @ericforest.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
Kind of a tangent but: these kind of fights really show the usefulness of a multiparty system. It doesn’t seem like multiparty systems actually stop the right from winning, but at least these kind of fights are between different parties rather than these annoying internal squabbles.

Well the question was would the Roman’s being advanced lead to worse outcomes than there already were, and it’s not like the Romans were the only ones conquering and the enslaving.
020
ericforest.bsky.social @ericforest.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
I get the impression the Romans mostly did atrocities to people that threatened them. They treated people they conquered easily better than most other empires at the time. So if they had a bigger advantage over their neighbors maybe they’d actually treat them better.
