Finished The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson for my third time, and it is more and more of a masterpiece every time I read it. Now I have to rewatch The Haunting (1961).
The original cover of The Haunting of Hill House from 1959. The title in large, white san serif font, with "A novel by Shirley Jackson, author of The Lottery" below it.

The background is black, with green, blue and purple plants growing wild, nearly, but not, entirely, obscuring the house behind themselves.

A little rainy day game for Alfred! I stuff bags with paper and treats (the organs) and stuff those into a bag (the carcass) with more paper and treats. It gives his brains and instincts a nice workout.
Alfred the dog starts digging into a brown paper grocery sack. Alfred the dog has pulled out a smaller bag from the larger bag and is inspecting it for treats. If the larger bag was a carcass, and the paper its flesh, the scene would be truly gory.

Dickens-era Gin Punch It was too warm on Xmas to make this, so I'm busting it out on NYE. Tiny Tim did NOT die, and he had a healthy serving of this concoction of GIN and SHERRY.
A pot of dark liquid, with spices, a lemon peel, and many apple slivers floating in it. If you could smell it, it would smell of cinnamon, nutmeg, anise, and clove. Plus a lot of booze.

Sometimes I feel like I did RPGs backwards. D&D is deeply fine, but it wasn't what I grew up with. So I've played and abandoned every edition since 2e like a bad pizza. I found storygames and thought, "Well, I never have to D&D again." And then I got drawn back in.

I don't love vampires. I love Dracula. And it started here, and has lasted well past the 3 years that I ran this campaign. This campaign is like someone dropping several tons of mixed auto parts on your lawn and telling you to build a car. A mixed experience, but I'm tempted to do it again.

Let's go back to the beginning. TMNT&OS was my first TTRPG and the one we played the most. If being a game designer has an origin, this is mine. It's SO fun to make characters in this, and there's some real mastery to be found. There's no nostalgia to go back, though. It's not very good. 😆

Fell at the first hurdle. Good jorb!
Game setup for Flip 7
Before jumping into the action, it’s important to set up the game correctly. Don’t worry; it’s super simple.

Shuffle the Flip 7 cards
Flip 7 comes with a deck of cards, and the first step is to shuffle them thoroughly. This ensures that everyone starts on an even playing field, with no one knowing what to expect.

Deal the Flip 7 cards
Each player is dealt a hand of cards. Typically, you’ll want to deal about five cards to each player, depending on how many people are playing. If you're playing with a larger group, you may wish to adjust the number of cards dealt to keep the game balanced.

Decide who goes first
Flip 7 doesn't have a formal rule for deciding who starts the game, but most groups go with the classic “whoever has the highest card” method. Of course, you can choose a different way to determine the first player; it’s up to you

Just me in my Voidsingles t-shirt finding @jordanshiveley.bsky.social's Hot Singles in Your Area at my local queer bookstore, A Room of One's Own. A kickass bookstore that happens to have the best RPG section in the bottom half of this state.

5️⃣ Star Wars: the Roleplaying Game 1e Having read multiple versions of SW RPGs over the years, the first is still my favorite. It's a little clunky, but it's still a graceful swan compared to later editions. And the GM advice! We didn't have to wait for the indie boom to learn to establish tone.

4️⃣ Good Society I don't care if you're not a fan of Jane Austen (but seriously, go read some,) read Good Society. Oh my goodness, the writing is so good. Most RPG writing is fine, and there's often too much of it. Good Society infuses the witty charm of Austen into its text, and it's a delight.

2️⃣ Bunnies & Burrows, 1e I love looking at early RPGs, because it reminds me that our paradigm could be so different. B&B is stacked with ideas and they don't all work, and they don't all work together, but it's such a creative work in a brand new field. Endlessly inspiring.

1️⃣ Cairn 2e I'm always in deep flirt with the OSR, and I've been moon-eyed over Cairn lately. It's just so clever and well constructed. Seriously, Yochai picked apart every part of the OSR, streamlined it and polished it. Except hexcrawling, but there's an article about it. 😀

Leh'Gahn Ridge is funded! Next up: Children of the Night, for the Hot Town underworld 🧛‍♀️🧛 Next next up: Heart's Haven, Fae Austenian Romantasy! By @dreamstobecome.bsky.social and @worldstoforge.bsky.social! www.kickstarter.com/projects/myt...
Text at the top "Ending soon! Kickstarter" and "Funded!" in big friendly letters.

A trio of folks in Renaissance clothing have a fraught embrace. The woman in the middle has her back to the audience, and each arm wrapped around a prospective lover. There is a halo of magical energy over her head, along with some sparkles. The femme presenting person on the right is not sure whether to kiss this person or not. They are also holding a sword, which is gripped by the man on the left. He has his head laying on the bosom of the woman in the middle.

A swoosh of paint covers the lower quarter, with text on top that reads: "Sword Opera: An RPG of melodrama and violence!"

A line and ink drawing, but the shading is in green. We see two sword wielding duelists standing below an Italian style castle at the sea's edge. The duelist on the right is bearded, with a sword in his right hand and a gauntlet on his left. He is standing with an open posture, as if taunting the other duelist. His opponent is completely covered, with a tall, pointed cap and a half length cape. They are holding 2 swords.

At the bottom of the image is a logo for the game: Sword Opera, an RPG of melodrama and violence. This text and a pair of drama masks with a sword through the mouth. All of this is over a paint-like stroke over the bottom third.

We even made it about more than sex stuff because we’re mature adults
Arouse
When you inspire someone to action or passion, you arouse. To give someone a sense of drive and passion requires an intrinsic connection and consent. It’s a versatile and powerful method, capable of great intimacy and great manipulation. Some ways to arouse:
Inflame the passions of your paramour for mutual enjoyment (and maybe to delay a difficult conversation).
Rekindle the desire for a sports victory in your teammates after a grueling first half.
Galvanize your lieutenants into a fighting force as street conflicts escalate into war.
