But McGuigan, apparently, wants to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on consultation - far more than was spent installing the benches, tables, and bollards for the temporary trial. Imagine the cost and frustration if that was repeated for Arbutus Way and every change to public space! #yyj

OMG this Bruce McGuigan is a ridiculous clown. Boring and competent is much better than a Monty Python Mayor. Clover Point is a TEMPORARY LOW-COST, 'Tactical Urbanism' intervention. Imagine what city staff would be dealing with if this guy was elected Mayor of Victoria 🧵 #yyj
But what happened at Clover Point has divided Victorians. I don’t believe that division was inevitable. Much of it came from how the changes were rolled out and from a process that did not engage citizens early enough, broadly enough or meaningfully enough before fundamental decisions were made.

According to this polling, climate is a top issue for ordinary people AND elites in Southest Asia. But . . . you are supposed to think that only white middle class 'environmentalists' in urban bubbles want stronger climate action. Complete BS!

Serious business reporters like @davidfickling.bsky.social are now expected to write exaggerated lines like "None of these retreats are being driven by ideological attempts to hit net zero." Climate action is an important factor in politics everywhere, including in Asia (and not just China).
Add all this up and the picture looks pretty demoralizing for gas producers. None of these retreats are being driven by ideological attempts to hit net zero. Indeed, the governments in question all owe much of their growth in recent decades to exploiting domestic fossil-fuel reserves. Instead, they center around LNG’s failure to deliver on a promise of reliability and affordability.

I'm unclear on what is and isn't 'culture war'. I thought the Koch bros started the culture war against public transit, bike lanes, fuel efficiency etc precisely to increase demand for oil (and oil and gas industry's political power). I think of stuff like this as part of winning that war?

Important ideas. But also some gaps / questions. #1 red flag is zero mention of #TrafficEvaporation and claim of "Rising traffic volumes" on p 1 *despite traffic volumes declining in some cities* (e.g. down significantly in Paris. Barcelona too?). Attn peer reviewers! HT @denisagar.bsky.social
Rising traffic volumes—driven by populaton growth, economic expansion, and the surge in
e-commerce deliveries—have intensified congeson and slowed buses in mixed traffic (Shao et al.,
2016). At the same me, roadspace for buses has diminished in aggregate due in part to the expansion of roadspace for cycling and walking. (Aldred et al., 2019; Yannis & Michelaraki, 2024).

Ahem! "Budget 2027 should increase the tax rates on the top four provincial tax brackets by two points and the next two by at least 0.5 percentage points; increase the corporate income tax rate from 12% to 13%" @bcpolicy.bsky.social bcpolicy.ca/2026/06/19/b... #bcpoli
3. Implement tax fairness reforms and other mechanisms to fund public investment.

To fund these investments in healthy people and communities, implement tax fairness reforms that reduce income and wealth inequality, increase provincial revenues and ensure the public and First Nations get a fair return from the profits generated by our shared natural resources.

The province should build on the tax reforms introduced in Budget 2026 to create the fiscal room for the critical investments outlined above.

As a start, Budget 2027 should increase the tax rates on the top four provincial tax brackets by two points and the next two by at least 0.5 percentage points; increase the corporate income tax rate from 12% to 13%; and tax high-value land wealth by further increasing provincial property tax rates on value above $3 million and adding a new bracket above $7 million. Corporate tax credits and subsidies should be reviewed and streamlined to ensure they generate public benefit for BC, not just private profit for investors (many of whom are outside BC and Canada).

BC should also review provincial royalty regimes for natural gas and critical minerals and increase rates for industrial water use to ensure the public and First Nations receive a fair return on our publicly owned resources.

BC’s current fiscal challenges stem from the fact that the province is collecting far less revenue than it did 25 years ago. BC’s own-source revenues—i.e. all taxes, fees and royalties the Province has control over—have plummeted from 19% of GDP to 15% of GDP over the last quarter century. This represents $18.7 billion in foregone revenues annually, enough to eliminate the current deficit with money left over.

Tax reform is a powerful tool to curb BC’s high levels of income and wealth inequality and fund the public investments our communities need. To add further revenue options and build trust in the tax system, BC should convene a Citizens’ Assembly on fair tax reform, where everyday …

Signed the Open Letter below from
former BC NDP MLAs and MPs, along with other prominent leaders calling on the BC government to recommit to provincial climate leadership amid fossil fuel expansion and worsening climate disasters.
Dear Premier Eby and the BC NDP caucus,
We write as concerned British Columbians. Some of us have long associations with the NDP, while others have played key roles in the creation of B.C.’s climate plans. Today, we are reaching out to express our
grave concern about the state of climate action in British Columbia.
B.C. once led North America in its climate targets and mitigation and adaptation plans. The province was
a leader in equitable climate pricing, and many of our municipalities have led on decarbonization. In 2019, B.C. became the first jurisdiction in the world to legislate a target to transition to 100% electric vehicle sales. B.C.’s climate leadership has been a source of pride.
Now, however, B.C. is backtracking on nearly every metric of progress. The BC Climate Emergency Campaign, representing 650+ organizations and businesses, assigned the B.C. government eight out of ten
failing grades in its 2025 Climate Action Progress Report. This is the worst outcome since tracking began
in 2021.
We are no longer seeing the climate leadership that we and other British Columbians expect and deserve. If a plan is defined as setting appropriate targets, with a credible path for achieving them, then B.C. no longer has a climate plan.
Instead we are witnessing widespread capitulation to the fossil fuel industry under the guise of safeguarding our economy against U.S. threats and other geopolitical shocks. There are now multiple LNG projects championed by your government, and ironically, some that are backed by Wall Street billionaires with close ties to President Trump. Last year, gas royalties contributed just over one per cent of B.C.’s total revenues, less…
