Under this theory, Marco Rubio can expel Canadians who say “you should stop threatening to annex Canada.”

The Internet you are proposing simply wouldn't exist. Breaking everything for everyone because you don't like how it works right now is not a healthy nor civil impulse.

with a 24-point loss in the first round of the Horizon League Tournament, Doug Gottlieb's first year as UW-Green Bay head coach/radio host is over. The results: 4-28 record, 3rd worst in D-I 14-game drop from last year's 18-14 record 2-18 in conference, last place by 2 games ranked 334th on Kenpom

Had the privilege to turn my favorite blog post from @slacktivistfred.bsky.social into a sermon this morning at Valley Church. www.youtube.com/live/psk772J... Sermon starts 30 minutes into the stream, but the music is worth hanging out for.

Does Apple Music pay more to artists than Spotify? I've been an Apple Music user for years, and while I know none of the streaming services pay great, I always hoped the required monthly fee meant better royalties.

In children per year, the US birth rate is at an all-time low, but in Miles’ per hour it’s at an all time high.
A graph showing the number of people named Miles born per hour. It has grown exponentially since 1980.

It would be fantastic if major federal institutions would acknowledge that the executive branch cannot legally unilaterally cancel or redistribute congressionally appropriated funding on ideological grounds and thus they have no legal obligation to comply with such directives

Trump funding freeze a blatant violation of Constitution, federal law: Legal experts
The Constitution, federal law and court decisions make it clear: President Donald Trump's order to pause federal funding is against the law, legal experts tell ABC News.

This is exactly the sports problem I'm talking about. All the Dems apparently need to do is magically have an entirely different country, with different laws and a different economy and then those 90 million people who still wouldn't have a coherent political outlook would go vote

ericboersma.bsky.social @ericboersma.bsky.social · 31/01/2025
Those 90 million people do not share your ideology or any coherent ideology. They don't vote because they basically don't understand our political system on any useful level. There aren't "more of them" than anyone, because there aren't any of them. They're nobody.

I really don't feel like "just make the magic thing that gives me exactly what I want happen and if you don't I'm gonna be mad at you" is the right medicine for what ails our body politic. That's what sports fans want, all the time.

I feel like I have to respectfully disagree. Sports fans are the most disconnected from reality people on Earth. Last year I talked with bona fide Detroit Pistons fans who thought the team would be a top 10 team in the league. They lost more games in a row than any team in any sport ever.

The current AI that's on the market or in the pipeline is not going to put everyone out of a job. It's also not going to empower us. It's a bubble. It will solve some problems, not many, and be discarded for most of the rest.

ericboersma.bsky.social @ericboersma.bsky.social · 26/01/2025
It's not programmed at all. It's simply a very, very, very large collection of statistical probabilities of what words follow the previous words in the chain. Getting things wrong is a feature. If it didn't, it would have the same response to every input. That just makes LLMs bad for facts.

That shift in who is displaced doesn't change the fundamental perspective that tech workers have to come to grips with the fact that they're unemploying people at every step. "This time it's me" is unlikely to be persuasive.

But making the argument that engineers aren't aware of the impact that their work has isn't going to change any minds. It's just that LLMs are displacing white collar and college educated work instead of taxi drivers this time.

This isn't a defense of AI; LLMs are I think more of a bubble than they are a real push in tech. And they do have unique externalities that are worse than some other tech pushes.

Trying to find a way to say this that doesn't sound super callous. And I don't work on AI. But every software developer either dies ignorant or has a day where they reckon with the fact that all their work is stuff that would otherwise be done by a person and thus is destroying a job.
