As hard as we are fighting, book bans are having an impact on the books being written and published. To put this another way, a very small number of well-funded people who don't write books, don't teach books, don't work in libraries are trying to decide what books are available for everyone else

My books have been out for 7-8 years, but I stopped opening royalty statements a few years ago because I was scared of how "bad" they'd look. Recent circumstances compelled me to take the plunge and open one, and I'm glad I did. Does anybody else have this hangup with book-related finances?

Favorite picture book in recent memory is CABOOSE by @100scopenotes.bsky.social and @ohtruth.bsky.social. This hippo child chooses chaos by messing with the front of the school lineup. Then he gets sent to the back, and does the same exact thing. Truly an agent of anarchy.

Been thinking about this a lot (not tagging the sender, for their privacy). Most of us won't have the chance for for grand, capital-R Resistance heroics. But every one of us will have a thousand small choices to make about how to live our lives and where to draw lines. Use them well.
Post from John Perricone

Several years ago l invited a Buddhist monk to speak to my Senior elective class, and quite interestingly, as he entered the room, he didn't say a word (that caught everyone's attention). He just walked to the board and wrote this: "EVERYONE WANTS TO SAVE THE WORLD, BUT NO ONE WANTS TO HELP MOM DO THE DISHES." We all laughed. But then he went on to say this to my students:
"Statistically, it's highly unlikely that any of you will ever have the opportunity to run into a burning orphanage and rescue an infant. But, in the smallest gesture of kindness -- a warm smile, holding the door for the person behind you, shoveling the driveway of the elderly person next door -- you have committed an act of immeasurable profundity, because to each of us, our life is our universe."

What are your habits when it comes to dropping books? Do you feel the urge to finish everything you start? If you drop a book, how long do you typically give it beforehand? I try to give books 50 pages minimum, but it's not a hard rule. In 2024 I had 69 DNF books, which seems higher than most?

Finally brainstormed enough that I feel comfortable tackling the actual writing! I've always given the advice of writing antagonists who aren't just pure evil, but I'm going against that advice here for the simple reason that our real life antagonists now are pure evil. I want kids to be ready.

I just put up a "leaving Instagram post" due to Meta's new homophobic/transphobic guidelines on "hateful conduct." Since I don't want to give Zuckerberg the clicks, here's a screenshot of it.
Left: screenshot of Meta's new Hateful Conduct policy, with the following text highlighted: "We do allow allegations of mental illness or abnormality when based on gender or sexual orientation, given political and religious discourse about transgenderism and homosexuality and common non-serious usage of words like “weird.”"

Right: a goodbye post to Instagram, which reads: "I will no longer be using Instagram due to Meta's new official policy (as pictured) of permitting hate speech against queer people on all its platforms, including Instagram. I do not want to belong to a social media platform that fosters an environment where I feel unheard, unsafe, and unwelcome. Mark Zuckerberg and his company of greedy, nihilistic, billionaire-class, Trump-frothing sycophants only care about profit above all else. Well, they won't be profiting from my clicks anymore.

If you're interested in hearing more from me (either in general or about this), I'm on Bluesky, which - so far, at least - doesn't seem to have an explicit clause in their terms of use allowing homophobia and transphobia:
https://bsky.app/profile/ericbellwriter.bsky.social

I hope to see you all around brighter pastures, in a world where my very existence isn't seen as mentally deficient.

If you're reading this, Zuck: I hope Trump's shoe polish tastes nice."

The right has taken the term "woke" and desecrated it, much like they do with many positive things. Now we have bad actors going on crusades about "ending wokeness," which is code for "let's continue to not only be hateful, but to make even more hateful policies." Don't shop at Walmart, everyone.

Wise words from Amelia Bedelia.
A page of the early reader AMELIA BEDELIA 4 MAYOR by Herman Parish, with a picture of Amelia Bedelia being comforted by Mr. and Mrs. Rogers. The text reads:

"Now, let's welcome the mayor and Amelia Bedelia!" said the announcer.
Everyone clapped and cheered.
"I am nervous," said Amelia Bedelia.
"Just be yourself," said Mrs. Rogers.
"I always am," said Amelia Bedelia. "Who else would I be?"
Mr. and Mrs. each gave her a big hug.

The data nerd in me especially loves this aspect of StoryGraph: you get nifty stats about the books you read. Here are my 2024 reads by mood:
A pie chart of various moods ascribed to my 2024 book reads from The StoryGraph. Lighthearted has the largest slice, then in descending order: adventurous, emotional, reflective, funny, hopeful, mysterious, informative, dark, inspiring, sad, tense, relaxing, and challenging as the smallest slice.
